Pols Pitch Petition To Bring Macy’s July 4th Fireworks Home To Brooklyn

June 28, 2012

They’re not giving up. At the beginning of April, State Senator Daniel Squadron and City Council Member Steve Levin led a rally to return the annual Macy’s 4th of July fireworks to the East River. Since 2009, the historic annual display has been based along the Hudson, stealing views from residents of Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan’s East Side, instead aiming them toward New Jersey.

Now Squadron, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and BP Marty Markowitz have launched an online petition “urging Macy’s not to leave Brooklyn and Queens in the dark. Bring the fireworks back to the East River so everyone can enjoy the show.”

At a press conference Thursday, the pols declared that they are again trying to convince Macy’s to bring the fireworks home, where they were based for 32 years before moving four years ago. As BHB previously reported, Macy’s has maintained that the move was temporary to celebrate Henry Hudson’s voyage up the river. But this “temporary” is beginning to smell a lot more like “long term.”

Meanwhile, poor Hoboken, N.J., put a warning on its community webbie warning of potential gridlock as “tens of thousands” are expected to flood the locale. Apparently, the community doesn’t have the moxie of Brooklyn, eh?

NYC Mayor Bloomberg, meanwhile, was unusually demure when asked about the location of fireworks: “It’s up to Macy’s. They’re paying for it. You know, I’d love to see it move back and forth… but in the end, it’s their call.”

If you’re in favor of bringing one of the greatest free shows of the summer back to Brooklyn please sign that petition here.

Brooklyn Heights’ Most Modest Park: Grace Court’s Greenstreets

June 28, 2012

Residents of Brooklyn Heights have likely ventured down Grace Court and seen the curiosity that must be the smallest named “park” in the neighborhood. At the end of the street, where it dead ends before the BQE below, is a tiny little green space tagged Greenstreets.

It’s not a particularly pretty destination, considering that it’s marked with a bright yellow “End” sign and striped black and white metal markers to insure that motorists don’t roar down the street to what would likely be death’s door.

Its 12×8-foot (approx) interior comprises scrubby green bushes and a cobble-stoned walkway that leads to nowhere… A chicken-wire fence that surrounds the back end of the space forces spectators to walk around the “park” to the sidewalk facing the BQE. Its origin: This little patch of heaven is courtesy of the NYC Parks Department’s Greenstreets initiative.

Weeniegate Raises Question: Why Can’t We Have Nice Things?

June 28, 2012

The recent imbroglio over the Montague Terrace Hot Dog Dude (aka Weeniegate) has made the fact that it’s illegal for ANY mobile food vendor to set up shop on Montague Street from Court to the Promenade a hot topic.

While we’re sure the regulation was well-thought out by the “olds” backintheday, many things have changed in recent years. We hear that folks in other parts of Brooklyn and NYC get to enjoy something called “Food Trucks.” These vehicles serve up a wide variety of tasty eats. But they, like our Hot Dog Dude friend, are not permitted on Montague Street.

So the regulation not only bans one of the most beloved and delicious New York City traditions from our Main Street, but also denies us some of today’s most exciting lunch options. VOTE IN OUR POLL after the jump.

For those who believe that mobile vendors would hurt Montague’s brick & mortar restaurants, we say that it should make them want to RAISE THEIR GAME. One can only hope these mobile innovators will inspire some of the local eateries currently serving pre-fab dishes to fire up the grill and cook fresh and vibrant food.

Why not allow one food truck and one hot dog vendor on the strip each day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.?

Check out what the main drag of Brooklyn Heights is missing right now:

Calexico: Yes you can get your fix on Pier 1 but who wants to walk that far?

Pizza Moto – Ok, the giant wood burning oven might be a little too much but…

Wafel and Dinges – Seriously superfantastic. AND WE CAN’T HAVE ANY!

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Truck – Yes you CAN have desert for lunch… unless you want to do that on Montague Street.

Any Red Hook Food Truck vendor – Anyone who has made the “trip” to Red Hook knows that everything there tops our local fare.

There are many more. What are your favorite food trucks?

Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd Shoot at Tazza in Brooklyn Heights

June 28, 2012

BHB reader/Brooklyn Heights resident @joshisagoodman alerted us to a movie shoot at Clark and Henry Streets via Twitter today for They Came Together. The film is scheduled for a 2014 release and is directed and co-written by David Wain (The State, Wainy Days).

Mrs. Fink sent us an urgent dispatch during our “grownup workday” that Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd (who has done a number of projects with Wain) were filming scenes at Tazza. Check out social media reports from our Brooklyn Heights neighbors after the jump.

Bird Buffs Gather At BBP This Saturday, June 30

June 27, 2012

This Saturday, June 30, Audubon New York aficionados will guide “birders” and bird enthusiasts on a walk through Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1. The educators will teach attendees how to spot and identify common and popular NYC feathered friends. The event takes place from 10-11 a.m., and is free to all enthusiasts. More information is here. A second bird-watching tour will gather Saturday, August 18.

Last year, BHB’s Claude Scales went on a similar bird tour of Pier 1; his report, with photos, is here.

Velazquez, Long are Primary Winners

June 27, 2012

According to NY1, incumbent U.S. Representative Nydia Velazquez easily staved off a well-financed primary challenge by City Councilman Erik Dilan, as well as two lesser known challengers, for the Democratic nomination for the 7th Congressional District seat. The margin of her victory (she got 61% of the vote) must come as a blow to North Brooklyn based Democratic boss Vito Lopez, who backed Dilan.

On the GOP side, the winner of the three way race to challenge incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Kirstin Gillibrand is attorney Wendy Long, who describes herself as “a true blue conservative” in the mold of Ronald Reagan. This, no doubt, sets Prom Gal’s heart aflutter.

Starbucks Deems Fulton Street Mall a Worthy New Locale

June 27, 2012

While it’s certainly no problem getting a morning java fix in Brooklyn Heights, a new Starbucks is coming to Fulton Mall, at 348 Fulton Street, next to Bank of America and across from Shake Shack. Obviously, the ubiquitous chain is demonstrating belief in the rapidly gentrifying Downtown Brooklyn nabe.

In May, the Heights’ Bucks relocated to 134 Montague Street from its former location at 112 Montague. Meanwhile, The Brooklyn Daily Eagle reports that the new location has posted signage and appears to be nearly ready to open inside. It’s located in a one-story building that most recently was home to men’s clothing store Porta Bella, and has 1,334 square feet of floor space.

Already over the past month or so, the area’s onetime primary shopping mecca has welcomed the Gap Factory Store, with Century 21, TJ Maxx, H&M and the massive multi-use City Point on the way.

Nydia Velasquez Over Ben and Jerry’s

June 27, 2012

CHB reader “Stephen” sends us this dispatch and photo regarding Tuesday’s primary:

Walking to work this morning I saw this (attached) and it made me wonder why Nydia feels she is above all others (club promoters, musicians, artists, etc) who get fined and/or arrested for posting bills. Isn’t this a form of vandalism? Post No Bills?

Just thought this would be an interesting point of conversation. I wonder what Nydia’s take on vandalism is.

BBP Fieldhouse Planners Really Want Your Ideas

June 26, 2012

At yesterday evening’s meeting at St. Francis College, New York City Fieldhouse, Inc.’s Executive Director, Greg Brooks (photo) said the project is in its early planning stage, and that the organization’s goal is to “meet public demand.” He said inquiries had revealed strong demand for indoor recreational facilities from area residents, community groups, and schools (the last was later seconded by Dr. Larry Weiss, Head of School at Brooklyn Friends). Mr. Brooks noted concerns about transportation and traffic, and said that an environmental impact statement would have to be prepared and filed.

Gabe Smith, of Thomas Phifer and Partners, the architectural firm retained to design the facility, said the goal was for the facility to be as environmentally and site sensitive as possible. He noted that, in addition to providing a facility for track cycling (Mr. Brooks had earlier noted that this would be only the second such indoor facility in the U.S., the other being at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles) and facilities for other sports and recreational activities, the agreement with Brooklyn Bridge Park povides that it must also provide a maintenance facility for the Park and restrooms for park visitors as well as for those using the Fieldhouse. The maximum footprint for the Fieldhouse is 115,000 square feet, but the designers’ intent is to make it as small as possible, consistent with the need to include the bicycle track. It is possible that the maintenance facility and the Fileldhouse may entirely or partially occupy the same space. Tony Manheim, a longtime park supporter who was in attendance, suggested that space could be saved by placing part of the Fieldhouse under the slope of the berm that is to be constructed to shield the Park from noise from the BQE. He also said that the Fieldhouse itself could add to the noise abatement, and that federal funds may be available to defray some of its cost because of that.

Representative of cycle clubs present at the meeting said they had polled their members and found that all were willing to pay a fee to use the velodrome track. The question was raised whether the Fieldhouse as a whole would be operated on a membership basis, so that all using the facilities would have to pay a fee. Mr. Brooks said this was not likely.

There will be another meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) evening in Willowtown to discuss the Fieldhouse project.
