Subway Update: 2, 3, and F Manhattan Service Restored

November 5, 2012

Service to and from Manhattan, as well as into Brooklyn, has been restored on the 2 and 3 line at Clark Street and Borough Hall, and on the F line at Jay Street/Metro Tech and at York Street in DUMBO. So, counting the 4/5 line at Borough Hall, there are now three options for Manhattan service from local stations. There is still no Manhattan service on the A/C line at High Street or Jay Street, or on the R/N line at Court Street or Jay Street. Service on the G train remains suspended.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Update: What’s Open, What’s Being Restored

November 5, 2012

Brooklyn Bridge Park reopened to the public Saturday morning, after floodwaters impacted several areas of the park, including play surfaces in the Swing Valley playground at Pier 6 and the playgrounds at Main Street and Pier 1. Electrical and irrigation equipment were also affected by flooding, as were lawns and horticulture.

Here’s the official update from BBP: All pathways will be open from dawn to dusk, including the Main Street dog run, Tobacco Warehouse and Picnic Grove at Empire Fulton Ferry, East River Ferry at Pier 1 and Sandbox Village, Slide Mountain and the dog run at Pier 6.

The following areas of the park will be closed until further notice: Main Street playground, Jane’s Carousel at Empire Fulton Ferry, Pier 1 playground, Sand Volleyball Courts at Pier 6 and Swing Valley at Pier 6. All lawns will be closed temporarily as damage from the storm is repaired. Check back with the Park’s Facebook page for updates. (Photo: Claude Scales)

A Post-Sandy Stroll Around Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park

November 4, 2012

This morning I resumed my routine of taking a brisk walk along the Promenade, down Squibb Hill, around Pier 1, and back. I was anxious to see how this part of Brooklyn Bridge Park had weathered the hurricane. On the way in, I passed this blaze of fall foliage (click on image to enlarge). More photos and text after the jump.

Looking north along the riverside esplanade toward the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.

A single, battered Rosa rugosa clings to its bush, surrounded by rose hips.

Frank Gehry’s 8 Spruce Street shows its Bernini drapery in the morning sunlight. A Machine, part of Oscar Tuazon’s “People” series of sculptures, is in the foreground.

The Brooklyn Bridge, seen through the trees.

Looking south along the Esplanade; the skeleton of the shed on Pier 2 is in the background.

Brooklyn Heights Outpost Helps Red Hook Residents in Sandy’s Aftermath

November 3, 2012

As previously reported, the Iris Cafe is using its empty storefront at 71 Atlantic Avenue to collect much needed items for hurricane relief in Red Hook. Mrs. Fink stopped by today along with Homer and Baby Fink to drop off some items. As mentioned in a few comments here today, the effort is in dire need of ready to eat food – things that don’t need to be reheated and that can be opened without a can opener.

Items are piling up for Red Hook hurricane relief

Megakudos to all who are volunteering there and throughout the city today.

Lex Ave 4/5 Subway Service Restored… More BK Access Over Weekend

November 3, 2012

MTA is advising that as of Saturday, subway service has been restored between the Bronx and Brooklyn on the entire Lexington Avenue 4/5/6 route. For Brooklyn Heights, that means 4/5 trains are again running from Borough Hall into Manhattan. See updated Hurricane Recovery map here. (Photo: CT)

In addition, MTA sent a Tweet that the 2/3 line is also expected to return over the weekend. Of course, that links Brooklyn Heights to Manhattan at both Clark Street and Borough Hall. As well, D, F, M and J trains are supposed to resume service into Brooklyn this weekend. The No. 7 line has been restored from Midtown into Queens.

Wall Street Journal: “New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday that 80% of service in the New York City subway system has been restored, including critical under-river connections between Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.”

MTA says some East River tubes will remain flooded through at least Monday. South Ferry and the washed-out A in the Rockaways will remain out of service indefinitely. PATH service between New York and New Jersey also suspended indefinitely.
