The U.K. Guardian: “At noon Friday the line for gas at the Shell station [on Atlantic Avenue] in Brooklyn Heights weaved around three blocks and stretched back for half a mile. ‘I’ve been here two and a half hours,’ said Brian Temporosa. ‘I’ve been empty for probably two days now. Luckily I haven’t run out yet but if I’m here for another 15 minutes, then yeah, I might.’ Krystyne Todaro traveled a quarter of a mile to the Shell station in two and a half hours. ‘This is the worst of what I’ve had to deal with so far, so I’m OK. Lex Ave 4/5 Subway Service Restored Between Brooklyn & Manhattan

MTA is advising that as of Saturday, subway service has been restored between the Bronx and Brooklyn on the entire Lexington Avenue 4/5/6 route. For Brooklyn Heights, this means that 4/5 trains are again running from Borough Hall into Manhattan. See updated Hurricane Recovery map here.

In addition, MTA sent a Twitter message that the 2/3 line is also expected to return over the weekend. Of course, that links Brooklyn Heights to Manhattan at both Clark Street and Borough Hall.

I applaud Mayor Bloomberg and New York Road Runners for doing the right thing for New York City and the Marathon after considering everyone’s opinion as well as logistical information. I spoke with the Mayor’s Office and Road Runners President Mary Wittenberg—a woman for whom I have great respect—and shared my personal concerns, and those expressed by Brooklynites. Mayor Bloomberg and his staff have done an outstanding job of leading our city through these challenging times, and this decision had to be among the most difficult they’ve had to make over the last week. Let’s continue the recovery process and make every effort to return normalcy to our city.

The Thin Line Between Light & Darkness

After four nights shrouded in darkness following Hurricane Sandy, Con Edison reports that power has been restored to much of the Lower East Side and East Village and parts of Chelsea. But Battery Park and the Wall Street area remain without electricity. The utility said it expects to have power back in the bulk of Manhattan’s blackout zone Saturday. This pic taken on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade at 9 p.m. Friday shows the obvious border between downtown’s darkness and midtown’s light. (CT)

Brooklyn Bridge Park Post-Hurricane Update From Regina Myer

Here’s the contents of an email Regina Myer, President of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, sent to members of the BBP Citizens Advisory Council this afternoon with an update on how the park is faring following the storm:

I wanted to update you on Park conditions as a result of Hurricane Sandy. In general, the park fared well, with all piers, bulkheads and riprap revetments remaining stable during the storm surge. There was some flood damage to various areas of the park including the lawns, the Swing Valley playground area at Pier 6, and the Main Street and Pier 1 playgrounds. We’ve also sustained damage to electrical and irrigation equipment throughout the park.
In terms of Pier 5 construction, all electrical equipment was damaged by salt water. The synthetic turf shifted from wind and flooding, and needs to be re-aligned. Flooding also caused damage to paving. Repairs are in progress and should be completed soon.
As you may have already heard, we will be opening the park tomorrow morning. Though the greenway will remain open from dusk until dawn, all lawns will remain closed temporarily. The East River Ferry will continue to operate from Pier 1 and Smorgasburg will be at the Tobacco Warehouse on Sunday. In addition, both the Pier 6 and Main Street dog runs, as well as the Picnic Grove at Empire Fulton Ferry, will be open.
On Wednesday, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy brought over 100 volunteers to the park to perform basic cleaning functions along the perimeter of the park and along the park sidewalks. We were touched by the outpouring of support and thank everyone who came out to help.
Thanks to those of you who reached out in the aftermath of the storm to wish us well during our clean-up efforts. We hope that you stay safe during this time and look forward to seeing you in the park soon.

Want To Avoid Looong Bus Lines? Take East River Ferry To NYC…

Columbia Heightster offers this helpful comment in our Transportation Drama Open Thread: “I made it to midtown via the East River Ferry. There’s no schedule, just a continuous circulation of boats. From DUMBO, it first goes south to Wall Street, then up to North Williamsburg. At North Williamsburg, there is a free transfer to a different boat that takes you to 34th St. Door to door was about 1hr 30min, but it was organized & civilized. $4 each way, free transfer. Sounds like a much better option than the Bridge Buses.”

Five Months Later, Ani Sushi Preps Opening

After Oh My Pasta! closed May 26 after just nine months in business, the space at 142 Montague Street quickly lined up its next eatery. Back in June, a sign in the window announced that Ani Sushi was “coming soon.”

Five months later, a sign now hangs alongside the window, the paper has come down and tables and seating are visible from Montague Street. We stopped by (early) Friday morning to see about an opening date, but the premises was still locked… Before Oh My Pasta!, the locale previously held Taze Turkish restaurant and Turkish Kapadokya. Aerosoles on the ground level has been in biz as long as all three. (CT)
