Tale of the Tweets: Brooklyn Heights Library Hearing

January 29, 2013

The Friends of the Brooklyn Heights Branch Library held a Trustees Meeting on Tuesday night addressing the impending sale of the building. As previously reported, it was  announced on January 15 several BPL branches would be impacted as the system shifts to digital media and services. The current Brooklyn Heights’ Cadman Plaza branch will be closing and be “temporarily relocated.”

The Brooklyn Eagle was on at the hearing and live tweeted highlights. (The “star” of the evening was apparently Josh Nachowitz—pictured here—the library’s VP for Government and Community Relations.)

Björk Posts Kickstarter Plea To Launch ‘Biophilia Educational Program’

January 28, 2013

Singer, songwriter & Brooklyn Heights resident Björk wants your cash, baby! The artist has posted a plea on Kickstarter to raise funds to develop a Biophilia app for Android/Windows 8 to support her Biophilia Educational Program.

She writes on the webbie…

the biophilia educational program is a new way to teach children about science and music. it has met with success in many cities, sparking interest from kids and educators all over the world, from south america to east asia to africa. the most interest has come from students from low-income households and schools with underfunded art budgets, and the only way to bring the project to those people is to have biophilia reprogrammed for android and windows 8. the biophilia educational project is strictly non-profit and volunteer-based, and that’s why we need your help.

Upcoming City Point ‘Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’ Offers Booze & Food With Flicks

January 27, 2013

The UA Court Street Stadium 12 movie theater in Brooklyn Heights is about to lose its lock on the cineplex monopoly around town. Plans are confirmed for the 900-seat, seven-screen Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to open in 2015 in Downtown Brooklyn’s City Point. The upscale Austin-based biz is known for serving food & booze to theatergoers in their seats, offering indie & mainstream first-run movies, alongside repertory programming. Alamo has a strict no talking, no texting policy.

The theater will be built during Phase II of Fulton Mall’s mixed-use City Point development, which was updated this month with a new rendering from architects CookFox. The second phase also comprises two highrise residential rental towers (a 19-story with affordable housing & a 30-story market rate rental) and a permanent Market Hall selling fresh food and showcasing Brooklyn vendors.

City Point will be built in three phases. Phase I at One Dekalb was completed last fall. The second phase is expected to wrap in 2015, with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema as a primary anchor. It joins coming retail neighbors Armani Exchange, Century 21, H&M, TJ Maxx and Raymoor & Flanigan.

The theater chain currently has theaters in 10+ cities, including San Francisco, Denver and Houston; with plans to open locations on NYC’s Upper West Side and in Yonkers. The Brooklyn lease was first tipped by the Wall Street Journal in December. Charter Realty & Development brokered the 43,842/sf deal.

“Popular sports league” to Knicklyn: Cease and desist

January 26, 2013

A couple of weeks ago we brought you Knicklyn, created by Brooklyn-dwelling Knicks fan Mike Sorisi to bring together fans he thought were being overlooked in the media coverage of the Nets’ invasion of our fair borough.

Response to Knicklyn on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and tumblr had been enthusiastic, so enthusiastic that Sorisi recently started selling a line of Knicklyn gear, an endeavor that is about to come to a screeching halt.

From Sorisi today:

“Knicklyn has been pressured by a popular sports league to temporarily restrict the online sale of all “Knicklyn” goods and apparel or face substantial legal action.  Despite meeting with and receiving clearance from several trademark lawyers prior to the launch of the site, this large sports association still feels the “Knicklyn” logo infringes upon their trademarks and intellectual properties.  We have attempted to reach an amicable agreement with said sports league but were left with only two options; either pay millions of dollars in licensing fees, or shut down all together.”

Reached by phone on Sunday, Sorisi sounded discouraged but undaunted.

“This isn’t a big deal,” he said. “It’s not going to slow me down.”

While unsurprised by the NBA’s action, he didn’t think it would come quite this quickly, and he pointed out that the objection is not with Knicklyn itself, but with the decision to sell goods that could represent copyright infringement.

He toyed with some design changes to his merchandise, but decided ultimately to suspend sales as he contemplates his next moves.

“This is only a temporary setback,”  he said.

And given the response to his announcement about ceasing sales, which Sorisi characterized as “great” and “positive,” along with an article in the NY Post about this recent development, he might be right when he says, “This isn’t a bad bump. It’s a good bump.”

Read Sorisi’s full letter here, and let us know what you think. Corporate behemoth strangling creative expression and fandom? Or legitimate copyright infringement?

Tale of the Tweets: The Gowanus Dolphin #RIP

January 25, 2013

A wayward dolphin found its way into the Gowanus Canal this afternoon. The internet went wild with anticipation and excitement around it’s potential rescue. However a happy ending was not in the cards for the sea mammal we nicknamed “Vito”:

CBS NY: The dolphin that appeared to have lost its way and became stranded in the Gowanus Canal died early Friday evening.

The wayward animal stopped moving shortly after 5:30 p.m. after getting wedged between a rock and a pillar below the Union Street Bridge, 1010 WINS’ Sonia Rincon reported.

Witnesses said they saw the dolphin flop around and struggle and hit its head against a pillar before it stopped moving and began floating.

Gowanus Dolphin, We Hardly Knew Ye

A dolphin lost in the Gowanus Canal, who we named "Vito", enchanted us on January 24.

Brooklyn Bugle Book Club: “Trapeze” by Simon Mawer

January 25, 2013

Image via Amazon.com

Marian Sutro, half French, half English, and raised in Geneva where her father was a diplomat, is living in London during the early part of the Second World War. Her parents are semi-retired, in Oxford, and her brother, a physicist, is working in London. Marian herself works in the Filter Room at Bletchley Park. When she is picked to train as an operative of the French Section of the Special Operations Executive she hesitates, but only briefly. During her training, she’s uncertain of her prospective role, though of course we know. One of the many interesting parts of reading this book is watching and responding to Marian as she figures it out.

Marian’s language skills are very good, and she thinks well on her feet. She has a tendency to disregard minor rules and to occasional impetuous behavior. Despite the insistence on secrecy she tells her brother Ned a bit of what she’s up to. And during her training course at a center in Northwest Scotland she “captures” a patrol of six soldiers while she and a friend are hiking on a rare day off. She’s not disciplined for this action, but not commended either – and when one of the six turns up again in her advanced training course, well, what she does is not entirely within the bounds of professional conduct.

Despite her continuing disregard of the niceties, or perhaps because of her ability to improvise, Marian is sent into the field, parachuting into occupied France to be in place for unspecified actions. And she has a dual mission – the authorities want to persuade another physicist, Clément Pelletier, who may once have been in love with the teenaged Marian, to escape from France to work on the development of the atomic bomb. Clément is living in Paris, and Marian’s trip to Paris, as well as her various actions there, are the crucial scenes of the book.

They are also among the tautest scenes in the novel. Mawer is adept at slowing down the pace to inject tension. His description of occupied Paris – the miserable, hungry people, the pewter and tarnish of surfaces in what was the City of Light, the stress of responding with just the right mixture of servility and dignity to German soldiers – is spot on. Mawer’s portrayal of female sexuality and the war’s effect on it is both sensitive and absolutely credible. And his use of Marian’s names (she has various code names, cover names, and field names) is shrewd.

Is Marian too clever for her own good? What do you think of her final impetuous decision and its consequences, for Marian and for the novel? Let us know in the comments.

You can read my review of Mawer’s nove “The Glass Room” here. Have a book you want me to know about? Email me at asbowie@gmail.com. I also blog about metrics here.

Landmarks Unamused By Interior Alterations At Former Gage & Tollner Space

January 25, 2013

The Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to deny an application to legalize changes made to the interior of the former Gage and Tollner Restaurant at 372 Fulton Street. The landmarked interior, which has housed a discount jewelry store since 2010 (formerly Arby’s and TGI Friday’s) has already faced mounting fines because it masked the interior decor without permission.

Curbed reports that the applicant insists its display and lighting system doesn’t penetrate the walls—but Landmarks sees it differently, saying that a majority of the historic detail is gone. Several gas lamp fixtures remain, while an arch was placed in storage.

According to an LPC spokesman, the building owner’s architect described these changes as “interior desecration” and actually apologized on behalf of the tenants. Commission Vice Chair Pablo E. Vengoechea noted that “hiding something behind something is not a preservation strategy. You need to expose what’s there.” The tenant must now submit a new plan and file a permit application for the interior. (Top Photo: Chuck Taylor/2010)
