All-New Bossert Hotel Could Open As Soon As Summer 2013

January 17, 2013

The Bossert Hotel could begin receiving hotel guests at 98 Montague Street as early as this summer, according to a report from the Architect’s Newpaper—as long as construction remains on schedule. That includes preserving the facade, lobby and reception area, updating the rooms with new design finishes and amenities, and restoring the Marine Roof to a restaurant and lounge.

On January 8, the Board of Standards & Appeals unanimously approved a request for variance to change the Certificate of Occupancy for “transient hotel use, accessory hotel use and commercial use,” officially allowing the building to open its doors as a hotel once again.

David Bistricer and Joseph Chetrit closed on the 103-year-old, 14-story property, for $81 million in November. Since the 1980s, the building had been owned the Jehovah’s Witnesses and used as a community facility. At the time of purchase, Bistricer said the hotel would remain independent and maintain the name of original developer, lumber mogul Louis Bossert.

Red Hook’s Fairway Market Reopening In March Following Sandy Nightmare

January 16, 2013

The Fairway Market in Red Hook was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy in November, as the 52,000sf waterfront grocery at the base of Van Brunt took on 5 feet of water—which also had a detrimental effect on surrounding boutique businesses that depended on Fairway’s customer base. Good news: Fairway’s Facebook page reveals that the store is planning to reopen in March—and it’s also hiring additional staff. Welcome home, Fairway… you’ve been missed.

UPDATE: More about Red Hook businesses in The New York Times. (Photo: Brownstoner)

St. Francis College Professor Sorrentino Hosts ‘Presidency, FBI and MLK’ Feb. 13

January 15, 2013

Presidential Scholar & St. Francis Political Science Professor Frank Sorrentino will lead a discussion on “The Presidency, The FBI and Martin Luther King” at the St. Francis College Founders Hall on Wednesday, February 13 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. The free lecture is open to the public.

To honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and mark Black History Month, the discussion will focus “on the web of relations between various parties that resulted in counter-intelligence activities against Dr. King. These activities included surveillance and the release of information to news outlets and other prominent parties such as members of Congress, religious leaders, university presidents, as well as foundations and other significant donors to Dr. King and his organization. These measures also helped foment feuds among various civil rights leaders and organizations.”

The theme of the talk is exposure of the political battle for power and policy in America, which dovetails into the subject matter of Dr. Sorrentino’s new book, “Presidential Leadership and the Bureaucratic State,” published by Outskirts Press. A book signing of the newly published work will take place after the lecture.

St. Francis College is located at 180 Remsen Street in Brooklyn Heights.

Gothamist Weighs In On Atlantic Avenue’s Red Gravy Restaurant

January 12, 2013

Saul Bolton’s new eatery, Red Gravy, which opened at 151 Atlantic Avenue in December, got props from the Zagat Blog earlier this week. Now Gothamist weighs in, also offering some keen pics and the dinner menu.

Gothamist: “Chef Saul Bolton, the talented toque who runs Saul, one of the first Michelin-starred restaurant in Brooklyn, has opened a new joint in Brooklyn Heights called Red Gravy. The 75-seat trattoria is located in the space formerly occupied by Mezcal at 151 Atlantic Avenue, and it’s not a flashy affair. Exposed brick walls and wooden ceiling beams, simple chandeliers and a modest bar layout create a casual framework for Bolton’s seasonal Italian menu. Considering Bolton’s impeccable reputation and the lack of competition on this stretch of Atlantic, we’re not surprised to hear Red Gravy’s been mobbed.”

@Knicklyn: Knicks/Nets Rivalry Escalates into Guerrilla Marketing Campaign

January 11, 2013

Brokelyn spotted a sign that the NY Knicks/Brooklyn Nets rivalry is heating up inside the Barclay’s Center subway stop. The budget-minded blog snapped a photo of a “Knicklyn” sticker, a play on the Nets logo featuring Knicks colors that was affixed by someone (marketing guy, crazed fan?) to the station wall.

Brokelyn: Somebody alert Marty Markowitz! Some enterprising trickster has struck a blow for Knickerbocker supremacy with the above “Knicklyn” sticker. Not only is this an attempt to put a Knick foothold back in Kings County, but they were even able to slap it in the Barclays Center subway stop. Who are you, mysterious sticker bandit, and where else have you tagged up in an attempt to take back the borough for basketball fans with taste?

For folks using the power of the Google, they’ll know it’s to plug a dude’s Twitter feed and Facebook page.

And of course he’s got some merch to pimp out:

Update: Yup, Knicklyn has an online store.

Literary Irrational Exuberance – Shteyngart Blurbs

January 11, 2013

He’s been called the Balzac of blurbs, the Robert Pollard of blurbs. And now he’s the centerpiece of a new short documentary by Edward Champion, “Shteyngart Blurbs.” Gary Shteyngart blurbs and blurbs and blurbs. Why? He says he’s trying to get people to read literary fiction. He’s paying forward the help that he got when he was a newbie. And, well, it’s good for the ego.

Sausage-making is one of those things you don’t want to look into, and it’s entirely possible that blurbing is another. But if you’re strong of stomach, read on. Publishers believe that blurbs sell books – you even see blurbs on self-published books. So blurbing is an important service for fellow authors. But the search for a blurb can be excruciating, one of the many grateful recipients of a Shteyngart blurb says in the film. Shteyngart is willing, and his power is nearly mystical. One author says he lays hands on a book and comes to understand its essence.

I ignore blurbs. All critics claim to ignore blurbs. OK, I often look to see who blurbed a book but I’m not sure I’m ready to admit they influence me. This makes me unlike the Washington Post critic Ron Charles, who says in the movie “I am impressed by good blurbs even when I know they are friends of the author. . .” I like to figure out the networks – who knows who, who studied with whom. I always read the acknowledgements, too.

The film is full of grateful recipients of Shteyngart’s blurb largesse, including A.J. Jacobs, whose New York Times column on blurbing says:

A literary blog once created a word collage out of all blurbs by the novelist Gary Shteyngart. “My blurbing standards are very high,” Shteyngart told me. “I look for the following: Two covers, one spine, at least 40 pages, ISBN number, title, author’s name. Once those conditions are satisfied, I blurb. And I blurb hard. I’ve blurbed about a hundred novels in the past 10 years, nearly every one that landed on my desk.

Shteyngart admits to the ego – and to a few other things too. Like not finishing all the books he’s blurbed. And did he blurb the film? Here’s his tweet:

It’s all part of the game. Do you read blurbs? Do you read Shteyngart’s blurbs? Do they influence you? Let us know in the comments.

Publisher’s note: We got our own Shteyngart blurb!

Brooklyn Net Kris Humphries Gets Tour of Borough from DJ Clark Kent

January 10, 2013

Hip Hop legend, DJ, sneaker enthusiast/designer and Jay-Z pal DJ Clark Kent shows Brooklyn Net Kris Humphries around the borough in a new YouTube video.

The duo’s first stop on their tour is Flatbush’s legendary sports apparel shop Get Set.

“Will they know you in here?” Humphries, who was famously married for to reality star/now Kanye West galpal Kim Kardashian for 72 days, asks Kent as they walk in.

“They key is for them to get to know you,” Kent replies.

After strolling around the store, signing autographs and checking out sneakers the pair end up at the Family Affair barbershop on Utica Avenue. Humphries agrees to get a little shape up from barber Tiki, who is clearly a good sport judging by the fact that he’s wearing a Nets cap in the video.

The 7 minute plus video has about 1500 views on YouTube as of this writing, but that’s enough to generate some truly biting comments from the peanut gallery, including some serious chin music from this guy:
