The Daily Show Ponders Dov Hikind Poor Purim Costume Choice of Blackface

February 27, 2013

The New York Observer covers the reaction of the Daily Show to NYS Assemblymember Dov Hickind’s “black basketball player” Purim costume.

Hikind who has totally defended his choice for the usually whimsical holiday telling the New York Times, “The main objective that I have is not to be recognizable. Of course the intention was not to offend anyone. That’s the last thing that I ever imagined that would happen, to be very honest. It never crossed my mind.”

Clearly he’s never heard of Ted Danson.

NYO: “If you live in the New York area, you may be familiar with State Assemblyman Dov Hikind,” the show’s host, Jon Stewart, began as he ticked off allegations of anti-Semitism Mr. Hikind has leveled against others. “Some of this may seem like a bit of an overreaction, but the guy is standing up for a group, whenever he feels this group has been unfairly maligned or held up for ridicule. So what’s he been up to lately?”

He played a clip of a local news broadcast covering the costume controversy, causing Mr. Stewart to lower his head and gasp, “Oh boy.”

After rattling off a few jokes, Mr. Stewart transitioned to a second segment where Jessica Williams, the show’s “Senior Purim Correspondent,” blasted Mr. Hikind and the Jewish community writ large for failing to pay enough respect to “the tenth most-important Jewish holiday there is.”

Michael Simmons & Slewfoot, "Instant Forget" (NSFL).

February 27, 2013

Michael Simmons has been busy lately. A few days ago he sent me a link to an article claiming Elvis was Jewish. Now he provides a video (best viewed in full screen mode) by Thelma Blitz (aka clairedelune49) “made…without my knowledge or consent” (though evidently with his ex post facto approval). Here are his notes:

The song is “Instant Forget” by Michael Simmons & Slewfoot, written by Rob Stoner, recorded live at The Other End in December 1977. This is around the time Creem magazine called me “The Father Of Country Punk” and named Slewfoot one of the best punk rock bands in New York — even though we were emphatically not punk, except in attitude.

The visual is a Foto Funny I wrote (and starred in) for my 1980s Lampoon column “Drinking Tips & Other War Stories.” The strip was shot by director Allan Arkush (Rock ‘n’ Roll High School), the other male dinner guest is the late, great transgressive comedian Budge Threlkeld, the brunette is Allan’s wife Joanne Palace, the blonde is jazz singer Michele Winding. The waiter is an actor who was also a real waiter.

It ain’t high art, although I was usually high.

Addendum: The Drinking Tips illustration was by my friend Drew Friedman and the point of my column was to JUST SAY DEFINITELY during the JUST SAY NO era.

So, for those of you undertaking seasonal disciplines, this is definitely Not Safe For Lent.

First Presbyterian Church & Key Food Partner To Replenish ‘Mission Brooklyn’ Food Pantry

February 26, 2013

The First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn has partnered with Key Food to help fulfill its “Mission Brooklyn” initiative. On Friday, March 1, from 7-8 p.m., locals may donate contributions and food items at the Key Food @ 102 Montague Street, to help restock FPC’s Food Pantry.

After several months of increased need, the church’s pantry, which serves some 120 community members, is in dire need of restocking. Key Food is allowing FPC’s Mission Brooklyn—its monthly youth service initiative—to set up tables on March 1, during which shoppers can buy cans of food from the grocery that will be directly donated to the Food Pantry. Cash and check donations are also welcome and will be used to purchase food.

FPC notes: “In 2009, the FPC Food Pantry experienced a 58% increase in the number of people visiting the pantry for emergency and supplementary food. In 2012, this need remained at an all-time high, as demand continues to increase, particularly among low-income caregivers and out-of-work breadwinners. Clients are often the working poor of all ages with fixed incomes and limited mobility, making the FPC Food Pantry an important source of support. All people are welcome to the pantry; no one is turned away for any reason.”

First Presbyterian is located at 124 Henry Street. Read more about the food pantry and its accomplishments and needs at its website. The Food Pantry is every Thursday at 10 a.m.

Brooklyn Bugle Book Club: “Vacant Possession” by Hilary Mantel

February 22, 2013

Image via Amazon.com

The completely mad are different from you and me. Or, maybe not: they have hopes and dreams and lives. When Muriel Axon, who we know (but the authorities do not) has murdered both her baby and her mother arrives at an institution after her mother’s death, one of the residents asks her if she’s mad or stupid. Both, she answers. But Hilary Mantel ultimately settles on another word to describe Muriel, whose true character she unveils slowly in the course of her wickedly funny social satire “Vacant Possession.”

Suzanne Sidney, 18 year old daughter of Colin and Sylvia, is pregnant. Her amour is Jim Ryan, husband of Isabel Field, who was once the lover of Colin Sidney. The Sidneys have bought Muriel’s former house, even though they know, since it is around the corner from Colin’s mother’s house (now occupied by Colin’s sister Florence), that it was not a happy home. Old Mrs. Sidney is in an old people’s home. Mr. Field, Isabel’s father who, it might as well be said, was the father of Muriel’s baby, is in the same home. When I thought about the story, I was irresistibly reminded of this song by Tom Lehrer, except that the pathology here is mental.

Deinstitutionalization sets the plot in motion. Muriel feels that she needs to be repaid for the loss of her house and her baby, and while she may claim to be stupid, she’s as canny as a fox. Settled in an apartment above a grocery store she borrows the characters, if not quite the identities, of people she has come across. To her landlord, an immigrant of uncertain extraction, she is Mrs. Wilmot. To the Sidneys, whose twice-weekly cleaner she has become, she is Lizzie Blank. (Her landlord sees her once as Lizzie and takes her for a prostitute.) Muriel makes herself a canvas where she can paint the expressions she has observed others use.

Muriel is not the only character struggling to keep things from falling apart. Suzanne expects Jim to leave his wife and marry her; when that does not happen she ditches her parents. The only person she trusts is Lizzie. Mrs. Sidney wakes up from her stupor and recovers enough to be sent home. The only person who can bear to be with her is Lizzie, much to relief of Colin, Sylvia, and Florence. Old Mrs. Sidney recognizes Lizzie as Muriel, but no one takes her seriously. Colin is convinced Sylvia wants to leave him for the vicar, though eventually they reconcile, and having decided to move, start working together again.

Mantel uses the book to explore our relationships with each other, with our houses, and with time. In a way, these relationships define us. In another, they control us. So when they are ended, by ourselves, or by circumstance, who is released? In the nicely ambiguous final section Mantel rearranges everything. If you have theories about the ending please share them in the comments.

Court Puts Brakes On LICH Closure

February 21, 2013

According to this NY1 story, a court has issued a temporary restraining order that blocks SUNY Downstate from implementing its just issued plan to close Long Island College Hospital. The judge who issued the order has scheduled a further hearing for March 7. Petitioners in this case are unions representing nurses and hospital workers; however, the NY1 story also quotes a “local resident” who recently used the LICH emergency room as saying the care provided there was “really good.” This is a developing story; we will monitor and keep you updated.

Elvis was Jewish. That’s the emmes.

February 20, 2013
My old Lion’s Head drinking buddy Michael Simmons, often a helpful source of ideas for blog posts, sent me a message with the caption “The King of the Jews.”  In it, he asked, “Was Elvis a landsmann?” (roughly, the Yiddish equivalent of “homeboy”) and gave a link to an article in Tablet magazine, the server of which is now down, perhaps thanks to the folks in Unit 61398. Anyway, according to the article, Elvis was halakhically (i.e. according to Jewish law) a Jew by virtue of being descended from a Jewish great-great grandmother, Nancy Burdine, exclusively through the female line. The article also claims that Elvis’ mother, Gladys Love Presley, was aware and proud of her Jewish heritage. As a consequence, Elvis had a Star of David carved onto her gravestone.
Then there’s this video: a montage of still photos with a soundtrack, allegedly of Elvis singing Hava Nagila. Or is it really someone else?

You decide.

By the way, emmes is the Yiddish word for truth. I learned this from my friend Gersh Kuntzman.
Addendum: Blogger Debbie Schlussel posted about Elvis’ Jewishness three years ago, assertng that:

He even did what people stereotypically claim Jews do:  Elvis got a nose job (for the record, no-one in my family [Schlussel is Jewish] has had this procedure).

She also quotes from a Jewish Weekly article that traces his descent from his great grandmother, the daughter of Nancy Burdine and Abner Tacket, “the Jewess Martha Tacket.” This made me recall an anecdote I read years ago about the late Democratic honcho and prominent lawyer Robert Strauss. When he was a student at the University of Texas, a fellow student remarked about a photo of Strauss’ fiancée, “What a pretty Jewess.” Strauss replied, “You sumbitch, she’s a pretty girl”

Denis Hamill on LICH: SUNY “is going to kill people.”

February 17, 2013

In a Daily News piece, “Long Island College Hospital merged to death”, Denis Hamill retells an ambulance driver’s account, told to Hamill at Thursday evening’s community forum, about picking up a man in cardiac arrest on Hamilton Avenue, administering first aid, taking an EKG that was forwarded to LICH electronically, and getting the patient to LICH where the doctors were able to open an artery to save him, all in an elapsed time of seven minutes. Had the ambulance had to fight traffic to get to Methodist Hospital in Park Slope or Lutheran in Sunset Park, the driver said, “My opinion, add another 12-15 minutes, he wouldn’t have made it.”

In Hamill’s words: “Make no mistake: Close LICH, and people of Red Hook, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Heights will die.”
