The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy is having “Sunset Ohana,” its 14th annual (which seems to go back to when the Park was still a gleam in some local citizens’ eyes) sunset party at Pier 1 on Thursday, June 6 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. This year the theme is Hawaiian.

Our little slice of Hawaii on the Brooklyn waterfront will include authentic Hawaiian steel guitars and classic surf music, tasty island treats, luau lawn games, a tropical specialty cocktail, hula sessions, and much more. Be sure to wear your most colorful shirt!

Among the “tasty island treats” will be “spam sliders with green papaya slaw.” Can’t wait! (I’m not kidding.)

BRIC Arts Media and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy are co-sponsoring a series of three Celebrate Brooklyn! dance parties on Pier 1 the next three Thursday evenings, starting at 7:00 p.m. This Thursday, May 9, the featured act is New Orleans’ Big Sam’s Funky Nation (photo). The NYC Freedom’s DJs will warm things up. Next Thursday, May 16, is an Afro-Cuban dance party with Pedrito Martinez and DJ Nickodemus. The final party, on May 23, is an Old School & Hip-Hop extravaganza with Zapp Band and D-Nice. More details here.

Smorgasburg, the popular food fest that has attracted crowds to the Williamsburg waterfront on Saturdays will start having Sunday sessions at the Tobacco Warehouse in Brooklyn Bridge Park, at Water and Dock streets in the Fulton Ferry Historic District, starting this Sunday, September 9.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy provides this info:

Beginning Sunday, September 9, Smorgasburg will make its way to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Over 75 vendors will be on hand preparing everything from Korean barbeque and 10 layer Mexican sandwiches, to beer cookies AND cardamom marshmallows. Smorgasburg will spend its Sundays at the Tobacco Warehouse beginning September 9 from 11am-6pm and will be here through November 18. Be sure to come hungry! Admission is free.

We’ve received word from the office of State Senator Daniel Squadron that the “pop-up-pool” near Pier 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park will open Friday morning, July 6, at 9:45 a.m. The Senator will be there, along with Park President Regina Myer, Park Conservancy Executive Director Nancy Webster, Assemblywoman Joan Millman, City Council Member Steve Levin and a representative from Borough President Marty Markowitz’s office (evidently Marty, hearing that the pool is only 3’6″ deep, decided to give it a pass).

The “temporary” swimming pool (we understand it will be around for five years) located just inland of Pier 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park (see photo, taken from Promenade) is, according to Brownstoner, likely to open even sooner than a projected June 28 date. Stay tuned.

In other parks related news, the Wall Street Journal reports that City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, seen here riding the lead horse on the first official spin of Jane’s Carousel, and here with Brooklyn Heights Association President Jane McGroarty at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s “Sunset Bhangra” party, is resigning to become head of the San Francisco based Trust for Public Land. Mr. Benepe served as Commissioner for ten years. Mayor Bloomberg has announced that Veronica M. White, now head of the City’s Center for Economic Opportunity, will be his successor.

On Thursday evening your correspondent donned rain-ready togs before heading down to Pier 1 at Brooklyn Bridge Park for the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s Sunset Bhangra party, but the weather proved benign, as the rain that threatened stayed just to our north. People kept coming in droves; fortunately, food and drink were plentiful, and good. Video, more text and photos after the jump.

Looking down from the entry at 6:15 p.m., I could see a good sized crowd beginning to assemble.
