We recently went on a trip back in time at some of the restaurants in the North Heights. Now it’s time to start doing the same down on Montague Street. What was there before today’s eateries? What do the owners want you to order if you stop by? Let’s find out!

Our first stop will be Teresa’s Restaurant (80 Montague Street – Yelp! profile).

Teresa’s Restaurant. Photo by Evan Bindelglass

According to owner Teresa Brzozowska (yes, there is a Teresa!), it was a dry cleaners before she opened the restaurant in 1989.

Brzozowska is originally from Gdansk, Poland. She came to America in 1980 and settled in Williamsburg, where she has lived ever since. She had what she described as “life experience in the food business.” She worked in delis (German, Jewish, Polish, French, and American) and, in 1985, she opened Teresa’s in the East Village (on 1st Avenue between 6th and 7th). She had some customers and friends who lived in Brooklyn Heights and she found Montague to be a “nice street” and opened the second location. The original bit the dust in 2007, but the second incarnation is still going strong 25 years on. Brzozowska loves the support of the public and said being a “neighborhood place makes business very stable.”

What The Owner Says To Order:
Appetizer: Chicken soup
Entrée: Cheese and blueberry blintzes

Up next, we don’t have to go far. It’s on to Heights Café (84 Montague Street – website).

Heights Cafe. Photo by Evan Bindelglass

Buildings Department records from 1930 list the first floor as simply “stores.” As of 1940, the second floor was being used as a school. A 1976 document called the “Montague Street Revitalization” listed a York School, as well as an antique store. As of 1967m it was the Plymouth Pharmacy. For the 27 years prior to 1995, the first floor was the Promenade Restaurant, a staple of the area. It even had its own postcards!

Eventually it closed and the space became available. That caught the eye of Greg Markman, who opened Caffe Buon Gusto up the block in 1992 (he sold his interest in it over a decade ago). Markman teamed up with Joe Secondino, who was an accountant at ABC and with whom he’s been friends with since they were seventh graders at JHS 281 (now IS 281) in Bensonhurst, and, on May 15, 1995, opened Heights Café on the corner of Montague and Hicks.

While they run the day-to-day, Markman’s father Martin and brother Glenn (the real estate brains) are also partners in the restaurant. Greg Markman always loved the corner and said it needed “something special.” Since then (with the exception of a closure from this January to April for a remodeling and menu sprucing up), they’ve been serving “something for everyone.” “We love our customers,” he said. “[Some of them see the restaurant as] an extension of their living room.” Secondino called them “friends.”

They have had some celebrity customers. Paul Giamatti stops in sometimes, as do Jennifer Connelly and her husband, Paul Bettany. Also spotted have been Leonardo DiCaprio, Anne Hathaway, Willem Dafoe, and Susan Sarandon. Markman even got a photo with “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” star and Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

What The Owners Say To Order:
Fried Chicken at Heights Cafe. Photo by Evan Bindelglass

The Southern Boneless Fried Chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy, and coleslaw. If you are worried about boneless chicken being dry, stop. It isn’t dry and it is full of flavor, as are the mashed potatoes. It is so easy to go wrong with coleslaw, but this was very well-balanced. If you want a little extra creaminess, it’s on the bottom. The  gravy is wonderful, but everything else is so great already that you might forget to make use of it. Try to remember.

Markman and Secondino also own Dellarocco’s Pizza around the corner (214 Hicks Street – website). They opened that in 2012. In 1976, it was listed as a hair stylist and from 1981 to 2011 it was home to the gift shop Overtures.

The Bossert Hotel could begin receiving hotel guests at 98 Montague Street as early as this summer, according to a report from the Architect’s Newpaper—as long as construction remains on schedule. That includes preserving the facade, lobby and reception area, updating the rooms with new design finishes and amenities, and restoring the Marine Roof to a restaurant and lounge.

On January 8, the Board of Standards & Appeals unanimously approved a request for variance to change the Certificate of Occupancy for “transient hotel use, accessory hotel use and commercial use,” officially allowing the building to open its doors as a hotel once again.

David Bistricer and Joseph Chetrit closed on the 103-year-old, 14-story property, for $81 million in November. Since the 1980s, the building had been owned the Jehovah’s Witnesses and used as a community facility. At the time of purchase, Bistricer said the hotel would remain independent and maintain the name of original developer, lumber mogul Louis Bossert.

As much as Christmas trees are a seasonal tradition, so is the presence of Patti Romp and her son Tim in front of Key Food at 102 Montague Street. The Middlebury, Vermont-based pair has been selling trees in Brooklyn Heights for years, and have become such a part of the neighborhood that BHB’s Karl Junkersfeld interviewed them exactly one year ago here. In addition, the Romps have fostered such acclaim for their goods that The New York Times profiled the family here.

Sad news: One of the stalwarts of Montague Street has closed its doors after a robust 24 years. On November 30, St. Mark’s Comics at 148 Montague, which opened the satellite outlet in 1988, called it quits. A staffer told BHB today that it’s a familiar story along Brooklyn Heights’ primary retail corridor: a marked hike in rent. St. Mark’s Comics continues in its original location in Manhattan at 11 St. Marks Place. (Photo: Flickr/Pijus)

Who’d have believed that Hurricane Sandy would turn out to be the kinder, gentler storm—in Brooklyn Heights, mind you. Wednesday night’s sopping slushy snowstorm took down trees and major branches not only on Remsen, but all along Montague Street, from Hicks to Clinton streets. Heavy brush was also seen on Pierrepont early Friday.

Fortunately, as of 7 a.m., garbage trucks were circling the neighborhood like buzzards, picking up as much of the debris as they could munch down upon. All the same, some sad losses among our foliage that will require major mending in the weeks ahead. Meanwhile, the mature fallen tree across Remsen Street is gone! More Montague pics below. (CT)

Despite its prime location in Brooklyn Heights, it appears the former location of Starbucks at 112 Montague Street isn’t going to lease itself by way of osmosis. The coffee store relocated to 134 Montague Street toward the beginning of May, almost six months ago.

Over the past week, signage appeared on the locale’s window from realty broker Massey Knakal, offering the entirety of the two-story building for a 10-year lease, with “all uses considered.” The listing details 2,500sq on the ground floor and 2,000sf on both the second level and basement, adding: “Prime retail space in the much sought-after corridor of Montague Street… filled with a rich mix of national and local retailers; providing great food, shopping and community connections.” See flyer here. Monday morning, Halstead Realty at 150 Montague Street collected a gargantuan amount of donations for those affected locally by Hurricane Sandy. The office’s Meryl Blackman calls the response “a huge success, with Heights residents’ response overwhelming! We have sent 12 fully loaded SUVs/cars to donation centers and this morning at 11, we had a professional moving van to load out a huge amount of donated supplies from our neighborhood. Police community affairs helped us, too.”

Looking for a joint in central Brooklyn Heights to raise a celebratory champagne toast—or to drown your sorrows—on Election Night this Tuesday, November 6? There’s nowhere in Brooklyn Heights that stays open as late as Custom House at 139 Montague Street, which confirms it will be airing election results all night long—literally. Last call is at 3:45 a.m. The 80-seat pub offers 16 tap beers with three flat screens TVs, while the kitchen offers such pub grub as (well-reviewed) burgers and wings, as well as Irish staples like Shepherd’s pie. After Oh My Pasta! closed May 26 after just nine months in business, the space at 142 Montague Street quickly lined up its next eatery. Back in June, a sign in the window announced that Ani Sushi was “coming soon.”

Five months later, a sign now hangs alongside the window, the paper has come down and tables and seating are visible from Montague Street. We stopped by (early) Friday morning to see about an opening date, but the premises was still locked… Before Oh My Pasta!, the locale previously held Taze Turkish restaurant and Turkish Kapadokya. Aerosoles on the ground level has been in biz as long as all three. (CT)

Grocery stores in Brooklyn Heights were restocking perishable items as of Friday morning, as trucks began making their way back to the neighborhood at 7 a.m. Key Food management at 102 Montague Street told BHB early this morning that fresh fruits, milk, bread and meat are returning to the shelves, with night crews working overtime to stock. The biggest challenge, he said, remains trucks being able to find gas to deliver groceries to the neighborhood. For the time being, the store’s hours remain 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Atlantic Avenue’s Key Food was also fairly well stocked Thursday night, although those same perishable items remained AWOL. Ditto for Trader Joe’s, where the lines were—for once—almost non-existent. A stop by Garden of Eden at 180 Montague Friday morning reveals a similar situation. We haven’t made it to Gristedes yet. (CT)

At noon Monday, a vast majority of restaurants and retailers along Brooklyn Heights’ Montague Street corridor were shuttered for the day. Among those open: Custom House, Connecticut Muffin, Subway, Lassen & Hennig, Heights Deli & Convenience, Le Pain Quotidien, Montague Street Bagels and, uh, Verizon Wireless(?). Key Food was also open, with lines out the door as customers were methodically let in.

Several businesses—including Ricky’s NYC, Armando’s, Thai Kitchen and The Heights Salon—failed to heed Homer Fink’s missive that taping windows is basically bunk. As one might expect, hundreds are rushing to neighborhood groceries to scoop up what appears to be enough staples for the remainder of the year. A stop by Key Food on Montague Street around 1 p.m. Sunday revealed a checkout line that more closely resembled the Court Street Trader Joes—wrapping all the way from the front aisles around the entire back of the store. A celebration of “neighborhood greats” will take place Friday, October 19, 2012, from 6-9:30 p.m., at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church, 157 Montague Street. Featured at the “Spirits of Brooklyn Heights” gala are composer/lyricist Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon,” “Avenue Q”) and Harry Chapin’s daughter, urban/folk/soul singer Jen Chapin, who will perform from her own songbook along with songs from her legendary Brooklyn Heights’ resident papa, Harry Chapin. Also performing: Broadway and Off-Broadway actor Michael Winther (“Songs from An Unmade Bed,” “Mamma Mia!”), who will sing from jazz great Fred Hersch’s song cycle of Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass.”

The gala will benefit the landmark church’s tower and organ restoration project, while honoring legends of literature, art and music with roots in Brooklyn Heights who shaped the borough’s legacy as a cultural center.

Cocktails will swirl from 6-7, followed by performances in the St. Ann’s sanctuary. Afterward, dinner, entertainment and a silent auction will take place in the Parish Hall. Tickets are $75 and tables of eight are $500. Space is limited. You’re advised to purchase tix in advance.

The church, which opened its doors in 1847, rests at the heart of Brooklyn Heights, at Montague and Clinton streets. A cornerstone in the historic development of the community, it remains an active house of worship and a venue for numerous musical and cultural events. While there has been significant restoration of the building, structural improvements to the tower on Clinton Street and its organ are now a major focus for continuing restoration.

Back in May, we wrote about Montague Street’s “resurrection, revitalization, renaissance or recovery,” pointing to the fact that the retail corridor is healthier than it’s been in three-plus years, with a dozen new businesses opening their doors in the past year or so. In all, Montague has seen the coming of: Custom House, Dellarocco’s on Hicks, VIP Nails & Salon, Le Pain Quotidien, Ruby and Jenna, Area Yoga & Spa, Hanco’s and Starbucks’ new home, while we’re still waiting for Ani Sushi, which has been “coming soon” since June.

So the question is: With Montague Street thriving, what gives with the previous locale of Starbucks at 112 Montague Street? We reported then that the coffee shop vacated the premises because of roof leaks and plumbing issues. But it’s now approaching five months that the prime commercial space has been sitting vacant. It’s a bit confounding that such a premier retail entity continues to waste away. So we have to wonder… What’s the deal? (Interior shot below)

Brooklyn Heights is a hotbed of squash–not the kind you eat, but the kind you play. As this Eagle article notes, the Heights Casino “might well be called the squash center of the universe.” Despite the sport’s international popularity, it is as yet not recognized for the Olympics. To boost its chances of being added to the 2020 Games, a “flash mob” will assemble on the Promenade at the Montague Street entrance Monday at 5:30 p.m. More details after the jump.

This week 17 of the top 20 professional women’s squash players in the world are in Brooklyn Heights for a major tournament on their tour calendar. They hail from 14 countries and have traveled from as far away as Malaysia and Australia. In addition to their amazing on court performances they have organized an event on the Promenade in support of the sport’s bid to join the Olympics in 2012. Please come out and join them by showing off Brooklyn’s hospitality and global spirit. They will be hosting similar events in iconic locations across the globe.

As the official “Back the Bid” colors are red and white, participants are asked to please wear red or white shirts.

The third-annual Brooklyn Heights Association Dog Show Sunday, held during the Montague Street Business Improvement District’s Summer Space event, certainly demonstrated the passion neighborhood residents have for their pooches. Before hundreds on onlookers, 63 dogs participated, with nine dogs crowned the 2012 victors in the following categories…

Finn, Best Treat Catcher; human companion: Rachel Epson
Wellington, Best Tail Wagger; companion Stacy Mankoff
Grace, Most Affectionate; companions AnneMarie Carley & Gerry Dempsey
Cassie, Coolest Ears; companion Roxanne Murray
Finn, Best Trick; companion Rachel Epson
Lulu, Cutest Small Dog; companion Liz Haney
Oulo, Cutest Medium Big Dog; companion Robert Edmonds
Chloe “Bear Bear”, Dog Who Most Likes the Judges; companion Nicole Gershon

The winning dogs in each category returned to the ring for the finale “Best in Show” category, which was determined by audience applause. And the grand prize went to… Finn.

The BHA Dog Show’s volunteer committee comprised Dick Dadey as Master of Ceremonies; and judges Derek Divine, Sara Graziano and Ashleigh Thompson. Stuffed treat bags were donated by Tom from Perfect Paws, Sami from Pet’s Emporium and Andrea from Rocco and Jezebel for Pets. The Watchtower provided stanchions used to create the dog show ring, Levy Lorenzo from Issue Project Room managed the sound system, and Ashley Kalmar was videographer (stand by for video). While Sunday’s second Montague Street BID Summer Space event included plenty of recreational activities, with music, games, dance, restaurant & retailer goodies, the main event was without a doubt the annual Brooklyn Heights Association-sponsored Dog Show, which offered prizes for: Best Treat Catcher, Best Tail Wagger, Best Hairdo, Coolest Ears, Best Trick, Cutest Medium-Big Dog, Most Affectionate, Cutest Small Dog and Dog Who Most Likes The Judges.

The show not only prompted dozens upon dozens of canine entries, but drew a massive crowd of hundreds of enthusiastic onlookers on Montague Street, between Henry and Hicks streets. Your correspondent was consumed pawning his wares down the block during his coop’s (well-timed) annual sidewalk sale, so no news on the victors… but for the many that visited the neighborhood, it couldn’t have been a more perfect advent for autumn. Reminder: This Sunday, September 9th, the Montague Street BID launches its annual Summer Space, with a fun-filled day of freebies. Brooklyn Heights’ main thoroughfare will be closed to traffic and re-imagined as a pedestrian oasis from noon to 5 p.m., as restaurants expand outdoor seating, retailers offer special promotions and services, and hundreds of tables and chairs line Montague Street.

The day includes opera by The Martha Cardona Theater; AfroBrazilian Samba Reggae by Batala New York City, an all women’s drumming band; Muzik by DJ Ricardo Campos; and dances by the Brooklyn Ballet’s Company and Youth Ensemble. Free outdoor yoga and Zumba classes will convene, as well as chess tables, craft-making demonstrations; and for the kids, a photo booth, scavenger hunt, hula-hoops and chalk drawing.

Summer Space will also take place on Sunday, September 23, featuring the Brooklyn Heights Association’s Third Annual Dog Show, from 1-3 p.m. (More here).

For the full rundown on Summer Space, take a look here.

On August 1, the Montague Street Business Improvement District hired a new sanitation contractor, Block By Block, which BID says is a nationally recognized provider of supplemental sanitation and streetscape maintenance. Its team will be working year-round, seven days a week to keep Montague Street up to par.

The company brings to the neighborhood a “Special Projects” Ambassador to address specific maintenance issues, including graffiti removal, deep cleaning and other projects above and beyond typical cleaning services. Extended service hours will be in effect through the remainder of the summer during weekends. The new team’s uniforms are blue, with the Montague BID logo.

Take A Look At Me Now: 62 Montague Street Reveals New Facade After Two-Year Restorationhttp://brooklynbugle.com/2012/08/28/take-a-look-at-me-now-62-montague-street-reveals-new-facade-after-two-year-restoration/ http://brooklynbugle.com/2012/08/28/take-a-look-at-me-now-62-montague-street-reveals-new-facade-after-two-year-restoration/#comments Tue, 28 Aug 2012 13:42:48 +0000 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/?p=46493 (via Brooklyn Heights Blog)

The 10-story Queen Anne beauty at 62 Montague Street, near the entrance to the Promenade, is at last revealing its two-year massive facade restoration. In September 2010, the coop building began a meticulous project to repair and restore every iota of its brick, mortar and terra cotta exterior; this week, the scaffolding is coming down, level by level.

The Harbor View Apartments, later named The Arlington, were completed in 1887. The building was designed by Montrose W. Morris, with architectural firm Parfitt Brothers overseeing the project—as well as the Montague, Grosvenor and Berkeley apartment buildings on Montague Street.

The Arlington originally contained 20 family apartments and 10 “bachelor”—or studio—units. For its first 20 years, it was the tallest residence in the Heights. And now, it’s the building I call home. For more history, see the BHB post “A Love Letter To Brooklyn Heights” from March.

Are you kidding? This UPS truck parked on Montague Street Monday afternoon across from the AT&T store was adorned with not one, not two, but three parking tickets, each strategically placed so as not to overlap. I’ve never known a UPS truck to dawdle for so long that it merits this kind of overkill. Really? No, really? (Detailed pics below the jump)

Cats of all ages, sizes, stripes and colors were available for adoption during the two-day event at 105 Montague Street. A huge van provided by the North Shore Animal League housed the posse of pussies.

With the Brooklyn Heights Association’s annual Dog Show returning to Montague Street Sunday, Sept. 23—part of the BID’s Summer Space—it seems apropos to share info about how much New Yorkers prize their pets. Webbie Puppy Tales featured a “New York Dog Spotting” post Sunday, with stats from the NYC Economic Development Corp.: As of February 2012, +/-1.1 million pets reside in the city (600,000 dogs, 500,000 cats), with an ownership rate of about one pet for every three households.

The corporation breaks down ownership by region: Downtown Brooklyn, which includes the Heights, is home to between 15,001 & 20,000 pets. The most-populated NYC nabes are the Upper West & East Sides (lining Central Park), Staten Island, Astoria and—for whatever reason—Williamsburg.

Meanwhile, BHA President Judy Stanton shares with BHB readers that the organization will offer registration information and details for the Brooklyn Heights Dog Show soon after Labor Day. She says, “The idea is to make this homegrown show fun for dogs, their owners and the audience. Any dog who lives in Brooklyn Heights is eligible to enter the show on a first come, first served basis.” Poochie lovers with suggestions for show categories can email info@thebha.org, heading the Subject with “Dog Show.”
