Tomorrow (Thursday, September 6), M.S. 8, the middle school extension of P.S. 8, will welcome its first students. The school is located in the George Westinghouse High School building (see photo). M.S. 8 students will use the building’s Tillary Street entrance, between Jay and Bridge streets.

State Senator Daniel Squadron, who advocated and worked to secure establishment of the new school, will be on hand to greet students and parents starting at 7:30 a.m.

Yesterday was the official opening of the Brooklyn Beach Shack, a concession locted next to the “beach” adjoining the pop-up pool on the Pier 2 uplands of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The shack will serve burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, and soft drinks during pool hours. From the time the pool closes at 6:00 p.m. until the Shack closes at 11:00, beer and wine will be available. In the photo, Shack manager Tracee Loran, State Senator Daniel Squadron, and concessionaire Glenn Markman toast the Shack’s opening.

Your correspondent sampled the Shack Burger, while Sen. Squadron dug into the 1834 Burger (commemorating the year Brooklyn was incorporated as a city). We both thought our respective burgers (to steal a word from our man Karl) “DEE-licious.”

]]> Karl and cam were on hand for the opening of the “pop-up-pool” (expected to stay popped up for five years) near Pier 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Following the brief opening remarks by State Senator Daniel Squadron and City Council Member Steve Levin, swimmers eagerly jumped into the water to escape the rising temperature. Eventually, Mr. J. himself couldn’t resist the pool’s allure, and entrusted his cam to someone who caught him emerging from the water. Video after the jump.

]]> Mr. J. tries the fare at Governor, the latest dining venue by the folks who brought us Colonie and Gran Electrica. The food at Governor, located at 15 Main Street in DUMBO, elicited a new adjective, SOOO-perb! Afterwards, Mr. J. took the short walk to Pier 1 to catch the opening of this summer’s SyFy Movies With a View series, E.T. (The Extra-Terrestrial). Video after the jump.

We’ve received word from the office of State Senator Daniel Squadron that the “pop-up-pool” near Pier 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park will open Friday morning, July 6, at 9:45 a.m. The Senator will be there, along with Park President Regina Myer, Park Conservancy Executive Director Nancy Webster, Assemblywoman Joan Millman, City Council Member Steve Levin and a representative from Borough President Marty Markowitz’s office (evidently Marty, hearing that the pool is only 3’6″ deep, decided to give it a pass).

]]> State Senator Daniel Squadron will host his fourth annual Community Convention this Sunday, April 22, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the High School of Economics and Finance, 100 Trinity Place (one block west of Broadway, between Cedar and Thames Streets), in downtown Manhattan. The keynote speaker will be MTA chair and Brooklyn Heights resident Joseph Lhota. After the opening ceremonies and keynote speech, you’ll be invited to participate in discussion groups on issues of community concern. ]]> State Senator Daniel Squadron, whose district includes Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens (where he lives), Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO and much of lower Manhattan, will hold his fourth annual Community Convention Sunday, April 22, from 2-5 p.m. He has alternated the site of the conventions between Brooklyn and Manhattan; this year it’s Manhattan’s turn, so it will be at the High School of Economics and Finance, 100 Trinity Place (one block west of Broadway, between Cedar and Thames Streets).

Previous conventions have seen productive discussions on topics of particular interest to Cobble Hill residents like traffic, helicopter noise, schools, Brooklyn Bridge Park (Sen. Squadron is represented on its board of directors), and neighborhood preservation.
