Seen on State Street between Clinton and Sidney Place: autumn blooming flowers, along with corn, pumpkins, and, yes, I think I see some ornamental kale. Click on photo to enlarge.

Players Be Playin’, Haters Still Be Hatin’ — Tale of the Tweets: @BarclaysCenter Opens with Jay-Z

September 30, 2012

Brooklyn’s controversial Barclays Center opened this weekend with a series of concerts by Jay-Z who is a (teeny tiny) part-owner of the Brooklyn Nets, the arena’s home team.

Protesters, still clinging onto the notion that politicians tell the truth and keep their promises, gathered outside as fans filed into the show. The road to Brooklyn having it’s first major sports team in two generations was indeed a bumpy, slimy and sordid road. For a full account of how Brooklyn got this arena and what was learned about how things get done in the borough, read Atlantic Yards Report’s definitive primer.

Now here’s what the folks who were there this weekend had to say:

Tale of the Tweets: Jay-Z Opens Barclays Center

Jay-Z opens Brooklyn’s Barclay Center with a bang. Here’s the tweets to prove it including from our own @JasonShaltz:

Look Familiar? ABC’s ’666 Park Avenue’ Films Pilot Interiors At Borough Hall

September 30, 2012

While new ABC TV drama-horror series “666 Park Avenue” may be based on New York’s Upper East Side, its pilot episode features interior scenes filmed here in Brooklyn Heights. The show—which launches Sunday at 10 p.m.—stars “Lost’s” Terry O’Quinn and Vanessa Williams, and is based on the Gabriella Pierce novel. It follows couple Gavin and Olivia Doran, owners of UES hotel The Drake, whose corridors and upscale tenants are haunted by a wicked force.

In early August, the main floor of Brooklyn’s iconic mid-1800s Borough Hall was utilized for a scene that we’ll see in the show, with men decked in tuxedos and women in formal evening dress. The Wall Street Journal reports that the hall acts as a stand-in for the mansion of a fictional New York mayor, while the show “showcases some of the city’s most impressive, and at times forbidding, classic architecture.”

Dan Davis, production designer for “666 Park Avenue,” says, “It’s the mythical New York everyone dreams about but no one who lives here really knows.” The series’ primary exterior shots, meanwhile, are filmed at the Ansonia, on Broadway between 73rd and 74th streets. Other NYC locations you’ll see in the series include The Drake’s “secret room” in the basement of the Church of the Intercession at West 155th Street in Washington Heights. The nearby Hispanic Society of America, a 1904 Beaux-Arts library and museum on Audubon Terrace, will also appear; as well as the Flatiron Building.

Want Olympic Squash? Join Flash Mob on Promenade Monday

September 30, 2012

Brooklyn Heights is a hotbed of squash–not the kind you eat, but the kind you play. As this Eagle article notes, the Heights Casino “might well be called the squash center of the universe.” Despite the sport’s international popularity, it is as yet not recognized for the Olympics. To boost its chances of being added to the 2020 Games, a “flash mob” will assemble on the Promenade at the Montague Street entrance Monday at 5:30 p.m. More details after the jump.

This week 17 of the top 20 professional women’s squash players in the world are in Brooklyn Heights for a major tournament on their tour calendar. They hail from 14 countries and have traveled from as far away as Malaysia and Australia. In addition to their amazing on court performances they have organized an event on the Promenade in support of the sport’s bid to join the Olympics in 2012. Please come out and join them by showing off Brooklyn’s hospitality and global spirit. They will be hosting similar events in iconic locations across the globe.

As the official “Back the Bid” colors are red and white, participants are asked to please wear red or white shirts.

Two good things about the Mets this year.

September 29, 2012

First, we didn’t see an abrupt end-of-season collapse. The lads had the good grace to tank immediately after the All Star break, sparing us fans any unduly prolonged, then cruelly smashed, expectations. Indeed, now that any hopes of a post-season are safely gone, they seem to be having a bit of a late season rally. Playing the Pirates helps.

Second, we have, for the first time since Frank Viola did it 22 years ago, a twenty game winner in the unlikely (I like the word “unlikely” in connection with the Mets: the first Mets game I attended, in the summer of 1985, was won by a two run homer off the “unlikely bat” of Howard Johnson) guise of knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. His is an unusual story for the Mets: instead of a star free agent who, upon donning the blue and orange, quickly did an impersonation of the Wonderful One-Hoss Shay on the centenary of Earthquake Day, he was a much traveled journeyman pitcher who found his stride–or should I say his sling?–with the Amazins.

I’m tempted to fall back on the comforting mantra–“Wait’ll next year!”–of Brooklyn Dodger fans a half century plus a decade ago. But I know it ain’t gonna be so. Nevertheless, I’ll remain loyal.

Great News! La Mancha’s Sardines Live On at this Year’s Atlantic Antic

September 28, 2012

Patricia Ageheim & Tarek Debira owers since April of Chez Moi (located at the space formerly known as La Mancha) wrote BHB to reassure our readers that La Mancha’s Atlantic Antic culinary stand-bys of grilled sardines and paella will survive the change of restaurant and nationality!

Writes Tarek:

As far as the menu that we are offering:
Before we even opened, we found a blog mentioning the fact that La mancha would be missed especially their Sardines at the Atlantic antic. After asking about the Atlantic antic to several of our regulars and neighbors, we quickly realized that The Sardines, Paella & chorizo were extremely popular to say the least, and that it was going on even before La Mancha. By the way we have lived in the neighborhood for almost 5 years now and are also big fans of the sardines.
After discussing menu options with our Chef Matthew Koffmann and our management team, we decided that we should keep the tradition going.

Our menu will be the same however, we are shipping our sardines from Portugal and are buying our chorizo from Esposito (http://www.espositosausage.com/). Chef Matt is very excited to bring his personal touch to the sardines and paella and our Pastry chef Sebastian will prepare Apple tartes for desserts. The goal is to provide well prepared quality product so that our guests and neighbors will enjoy this fun afternoon street festival.

We cater for the neighborhood and we care about our guests experience and their feedback so we can get better at what we do, and adjust to their needs.
