Brooklyn Beach Shack Opens Next to Brooklyn Bridge Park Pool

July 25, 2012

Yesterday was the official opening of the Brooklyn Beach Shack, a concession locted next to the “beach” adjoining the pop-up pool on the Pier 2 uplands of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The shack will serve burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, and soft drinks during pool hours. From the time the pool closes at 6:00 p.m. until the Shack closes at 11:00, beer and wine will be available. In the photo, Shack manager Tracee Loran, State Senator Daniel Squadron, and concessionaire Glenn Markman toast the Shack’s opening.

Your correspondent sampled the Shack Burger, while Sen. Squadron dug into the 1834 Burger (commemorating the year Brooklyn was incorporated as a city). We both thought our respective burgers (to steal a word from our man Karl) “DEE-licious.”

BQE Blockage

July 24, 2012

We received notice from Notify NYC that the eastbound BQE (southbound as it passes Brooklyn Heights) is blocked near the Brooklyn Bridge because of an overturned tractor-trailer. When we arrived at the sidewalk overlooking Hillside Park at about 5:45 p.m., this is what we saw: an upright but apparently disabled tractor-trailer in the left lane; a flatbed parked behind it; a red car stopped in the right lane; and a policeman directing all traffic onto the Cadman Plaza West exit.

As of 7 p.m., WINS-AM reported that eastbound lanes remain closed as wreckage has yet to be cleared from the road, while traffic is backed up all the way to Bay Ridge. (Photo: Claude Scales)

Update: The eastbound lanes are now open. There’s a photo on Gothamist of the overturned truck further down the BQE that caused the blockage here (thanks to readers Bloomy and Joe).

She notes that this bus has been a valuable transportation resource for residents of the Columbia Street Waterfont District, Carroll Gardens, and Boerum Hill. She will be testifying at an MTA board meeting next week, and needs as many signatures as possible before next Tuesday, July 24. You can sign the petition here.

Police Cart Burns Near Pier 1

July 14, 2012

Karl and his cam were on hand around noon today when a small NYPD vehicle caught fire on the path next to Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park, producing an impressive plume of smoke. He was able to get some good video until one of the gens d’armes (Hey! It’s Bastille Day) objected (update: to use a favorite Finkism, objected err somethin’). Video after the jump.

NYPD shoos Karl away from harm.

Publisher’s note: We would like to thank the NYPD officer who asked Karl to stop video taping the fire.  While commenters here seem to think the officer was attempting to stomp out coverage of a local news event,  we can only assume that the officer was only very concerned about Mr. J’s safety and we thank him.  Seriously folks, Karl wasn’t dancing or anything like that.

Karl and the Nets: Perfect Together?

July 14, 2012

Our man with cam was on hand for the ceremonies at Borough Hall as Borough President Marty Markowitz welcomed the Nets to Brooklyn. He watched as all star backcourt Joe Johnson and Deron Williams were introduced; then, at the press conference afterward, had a tough question for Nets’ GM Billy King. When King said he was looking for a good backup point guard, Mr. J., perhaps having visions of being the next Dr. J., took to the court. Video after the jump.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Raccoon Captured

July 12, 2012

Our friends at Gothamist got some scary looking photos taken last night by Bobby Finger of a ragged looking one-eyed raccoon seen climbing a chain link fence next to a walkway adjoining Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The critter in the photo above is another, much healthier looking Brooklyn raccoon, caught on pixels by our friend Flatbush Gardener. You may recall our publisher Homer Fink’s encounter with a raccoon two and a half years ago, right on Willow Street!

The raccoon wasn’t the first instance of mammalian wildlife (apart from the unfortunately ubiquitous Rattus norvegicus or the familiar grey squirrel) to be spotted in the Park. Our man Karl found a muskrat living in a pond next to Pier 1 in August, 2010, and named him (or her) “Dodger.” Dodger hasn’t been seen since.

Gothamist updated their post to report that Park officials confirmed that the raccoon has been captured.

Brooklyn Bridge Park: New Pool Hours

July 12, 2012

Karl and his cam have been regular visitors to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Pool, so he was on hand for the posting of new hours for pool use that go into effect today. To accommodate more swimmers, shifts have been shortened from one hour to 45 minutes, with 15 minutes allowed for changeover. The first shift begins at 10:00 a.m. and goes to 10:45; the second from 11:00 to 11:45, and so on through 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. This will increase daily capacity by 60%. Video after the jump.

Update: Lady Susan Moving to New Location

July 10, 2012

This Saturday’s (July 14) reading, presented by Theater 2020, of Lynn Marie Macy’s work-in-progress Lady Susan or the Captive Heart, a Jane Austen Bodice Ripper, originally scheduled to be held at the Brooklyn Heights Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, has, because of the Library’s well known air conditioning problems, been moved to St. Charles Borromeo Church, 21 Sidney Place. It will be from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.; admission is free and no reservations are required; and the playwright and actors will be available for a brief discussion afterward.
