DUMBO Fishes To Sleep With The Fishes OR Farewell Fish Farm (Brooklyn Snappers)

October 18, 2013

BHB reader “Lew” sent us this photo of Ben Snead’s Fish Farm installation being removed from their perch at the corner of Washington and Prospect in DUMBO.

The piece was part of the DUMBO Arts Festival and described as:

Large fish head sculptures including a lane snapper, a yellow tail snapper and a rock hind, which are all found in local fish markets in Brooklyn. The fish live in tropical waters such as the Caribbean and are transported here for human consumption. By enlarging them and placing them on grass, they are taken further out of context.

Brooklyn Bugle World Premiere — SPOKE: A Short Film About Bicycles In NYC, Short Partially With Google Glass

October 13, 2013

The Brooklyn Bugle is proud to present the World Premiere of Heather Quinlan’s new short documentary about biking in NYC – SPOKE.

Some faces, such as Ben Lee an NYC sanitation worker, may be familiar to fans of Quinlan’s last film If These Knishes Could Talk.

In SPOKE, Lee comments, “My dad escaped North Korea so he wouldn’t have to ride a bike to work. And here we are in the greatest city in the world, and people want to ride their bike to work. I don’t get it.”

So how are those bicyclists, motorists and pedestrians getting along lately?

“The streets are dominated by toxic-belching death machines in a Darwinian death race,” declares bicycle advocate Bill Weinberg.

Quinlan was granted an interview with Paul Steely White from Transportation Alternatives, but he then later refused to be interviewed. Requests to the DoT for an interview were not answered.

About SPOKE

SPOKE is about NYC bikes – the good, the bad, and the needs improvement. Featuring interviews with reporters, city workers, sanitation workers, lawyers, and people who love bikes but not bike lanes, love bikes but not CitiBikes, people who want to scrap the whole thing altogether, and people who wouldn’t change a thing. Also featuring fast and furious footage shot on Google Glass. SPOKE is directed by Heather Quinlan, whose previous film, “If These Knishes Could Talk,” chronicled the history of the New York accent.

Bugle Got Game: Junkersfeld On The #Nets First Pre-Season Game Of 2013 [Video]

October 13, 2013

From Karl Junkersfeld:

The Brooklyn Nets played their first pre-season game at Barclays last night, Saturday October 12th. The starters played few minutes and the game was basically tuning up both physically and mentally and building chemistry. They obviously have a way to go to get to know one each others game but you can see it getting better. The ball movement looked good for the short time the starters were on the floor. As time goes on, the starters will increase their minutes on the floor and Deron Williams and Jason Terry will participate. They both have minor injuries and should be ready to play in a week or so. Time will tell. They will be extremely cautious with Deron and not rush him into playing action. The goal is the playoffs and the season is a long 82 games. No need to play him until he is 100%.

Bugle Got Game: Karl Junkersfeld At Nets Media Day

October 4, 2013

The Brooklyn Bugle’s Karl Junkersfeld will be covering the Nets this season. Here’s his first report.

The Brooklyn Nets are preparing for the start of Season Two with impressive additions to their already competitive team. Joining stars like premiere point guard Deron Williams, sharp shooting Joe Johnson, and All Star Brook Lopez are “The Truth” Paul Pierce, “K.G.” Kevin Garnett, “AK47″ Andrei Kirilenko, “JET” Jason Terry and backup point, 6’7 Shaun Livingston. This is a tremendous arsenal that has been brought together thanks to the very deep pockets of Nets Owner Mikhail Prokhorov. In fact, the Nets are paying more in “over the cap” penalties than 95% of the other NBA teams total salaries. He is very serious about winning an NBA championship.

This video includes my personal analysis, as well as, video from Media Day during a question/answer period with Brook Lopez, Deron Williams and Joe Johnson. Part Two will follow shortly with the Nets other two starters, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, later followed by questions for the bench players who will be crucial if we are to challenge Miami and Indiana for basketball supremacy.

Watch Common Perform “The Light” Feat. Tess Live At Galapagos In DUMBO

September 19, 2013

Okayplayer was on the scene last week when Common performed at the Galapagos Art Space. They write:

Common stepped through Brooklyn a few days ago for a live show at Galapagos Art Space, but rather than supporting a new video or upcoming album the multi-talented rapper/actor/poet was here to support the Ajile L. Turner Foundation, which is very much a family affair for Com. Ajile–who died in a motorcycle accident 4 years ago–was Common’s first cousin. The foundation which bears his name–which supports music education, specifically helping school children acquire the instruments they need to master their craft–is run by his aunt Mattie Turner.
