Bitch Fight: Brooklyn Dog Experts Weigh In On Taming Fido

June 10, 2012

While Heights’ residents have rightfully bitched about stepping in, jogging past or catching a waft of an irresponsible dog owner’s pooch’s poop on sidewalks and streets, the Sunday New York Post offers advice about dogs that become aggressive when they come bum to butt with other hounds. Two local Brooklyn experts are among those that weigh in.

John Squires, owner of Wag Club, a doggie day-care and grooming facility in the Heights, recommends that if your bitch gets bitchy, carefully “grab hold of the aggressor from behind, by the hips or back legs, and pull up so he’s on his front two paws. It will put him off-balance and make him look back to find out what’s going on.”

Cobble Hill’s Dr. Brett Levitzke, medical director at the Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group, adds to use caution: “Remember the natural instinct of the dog attacking is to follow, so you’re just bringing them close to you.” He also notes that “the biggest mistake people make is to reach in and try and grab their dog, but they can be bitten by the other dog or even their own dog in the heat of the fight.”

There’s more advice in the article from other Brooklyn experts, including Fort Greene’s Shannon Le Brun, founder of Waggy Walkers Pet Services.

As the borough’s thriving art scene continues to garner attention from all corners of the globe, the NU Hotel Brooklyn is getting in on the action via a new partnership with the House of Art Gallery.

“The collaboration with the House of Art was a no-brainer for us,” NU Hotel General Manager Javier Egipciaco explained. “We saw an opportunity to connect with the community, as the House of Art is based out of Brooklyn… and the caliber of artists that we’re getting now, we wouldn’t have been able to get without them.”

Seventy-five works of art valued at more than $175,000 are currently on display in the hotel’s fourth-floor guest rooms and sidewalk café and bar, according to the House of Art Gallery owner/curator Richard Beavers. The guest rooms feature works by Anton, D. Lammie Hanson, Dan Ericson and Frank Morrison, while the sidewalk café and bar showcases the paintings of Justin Bua.

New York City native Bua has flown in from California, where he now resides, to host the presentation “Justin Bua: Art Reflects Urban Life” at the Nu Hotel’s sidewalk café and bar this Saturday, June 9th. The afternoon will kick off with a workshop for teens led by Bua from 2 pm – 4 pm, which will be followed by a slide show and discussion of the artist’s work at 5 pm. Bua will then sign copies of his most recent book “The Legends of Hip Hop.” A reception to celebrate Bua’s work and the new partnership between the NU Hotel and the House of Art will also take place from 6 – 9 pm. All events are free and open to the public, but an RSVP is required for the evening reception. Reservations for the reception can be made by emailing rsvp_bua@nuhotelbrooklyn.com.

“Bua is one of the top contemporary artists in the country, so it was only fitting that he be the artist that we feature with this groundbreaking partnership between House of Art Gallery and the NU Hotel Brooklyn,” Beavers noted. “He lives in California now, but his work is inspired and influenced by the Brooklyn culture and the diversity that it offers.”

A former student of Manhattan’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, Bua went on to receive his B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. With a varied background that includes writing graffiti and breakdancing, Bua has carved out a fascinating career with projects in fashion, commercial art, education, television and publishing. His paintings currently on display at the NU Hotel all feature portraits of the famous personalities featured in his book “The Legends of Hip Hop,” including New York City icons such as the Beastie Boys, Jay-Z and Run-D.M.C.

Bua is the first in a rotating roster of artists that will be showcased in the NU Hotel’s sidewalk café and bar, according to Beavers, who explained that a new exhibition will open every three months. In addition, more art is on the way to decorate the guest rooms on the hotel’s second and third floors, including works by Jamel Shabazz and Danny Simmons.

“The idea was to show the richness and the diversity and the quality of artwork that we have to offer in the borough of Brooklyn,” Beavers said of the work that has been selected for exhibit in the hotel. “I applaud the staff of NU Hotel for understanding the importance of community and providing this lovely hotel as a backdrop for the artwork to be displayed.”

NU Hotel Brooklyn is located at 85 Smith Street, on the corner of Atlantic Avenue.

Watch Your Wheels: Hike In Bike Thefts In Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens

June 8, 2012

Trader Joe’s isn’t the only place in the area where a rash of thefts have been reported. Police are warning that bicycle thefts are on the increase throughout Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens over the past several months. Capt. Jeffrey Schiff, commanding officer of the 76th Precinct, notified residents of the bike hike trend at a recent community council meeting, advising riders to keep bikes locked when unattended.

Police have reported nine bike thefts in the past 60 days, Schiff says, compared to only three in March and February. Most occurred in apartment hallways where bikes were stored without locks. Rogues have also used tools to cut locks and swipe bikes from sidewalks.

The 76th Precinct offers bike registration, with an identifiable serial number to help owners protect property and help cops ID stolen bikes. Registration will be free at the Smith Street Fair June 24.

Film Critic Aaron Hillis Takes Over Cobble Hill’s ‘Video Free Brooklyn’

May 30, 2012

Film critic Aaron Hillis—editor of GreenCine Daily and programmer at indie cinema and gastropub reRun at reBar in DUMBO—is bringing a new spin to a retro business venture: He’s taking over a beloved video store in Cobble Hill.

According to Filmmaker Magazine (and first tipped by McBrooklyn), Hillis’ operation of decade-old “Video Free Brooklyn” at 244 Smith Street, will now be all artisanal and perhaps co-op. “I want to reinvent the video store experience and make it fun again,” he says. Hillis will be at the front counter as of June 1.

Filmmaker muses, “At a time when the independent film world is obsessed with VOD, downloads and streaming, Hillis is time-traveling back to the world of plastic cases, late fees and, on the more positive side, savvy clerks who know you, your tastes and are vocal in their recommendations.”

Hillis tells the magazine:

Video Free Brooklyn (has) been a real staple, an institution in my neighborhood of Cobble Hill for the last decade. The owner, Dan Wu, has lived in Kentucky for a few years and wants to pursue another endeavor. And the store has been sustainable. It’s in a well-trafficked area and caters to a media-savvy (clientele), a community that needs to be served with a well-curated video store.

I’m not scared of things like Netflix, because that’s so impersonal. I’ve got 200 movies in my instant streaming queue and I’m not watching any of them because I click on them and I feel that’s good enough. It’s like a Facebook friend: It doesn’t have the same perceived value. And I’ve had so much interest from people within the film industry—critics, filmmakers, programmers—that it may end up like a co-op, mainly staffed by film-minded people, many of whom will have full-time jobs already and will be working their required monthly shifts. I want to reinvent the video store experience and make it fun again.

Buyer Beware: Rash Of Thefts Reported At Atlantic Ave. Trader Joe’s

May 28, 2012

Trader Joe’s on Atlantic Avenue at the border of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill has reported five thefts over the past several months from unattended shopping carts.

Capt. Jeffrey Schiff, who commands the 76th Precinct, recently informed the community council that the store has no surveillance cameras installed in the crowded grocery, despite pleading with Trader Joe’s several times to install them. So far, the store has declined to cooperate with the recommended policy.
