Buyer Beware: Rash Of Thefts Reported At Atlantic Avenue Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s on Atlantic Avenue at the border of Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights has reported five thefts over the past several months from unattended shopping carts. Capt. Jeffrey Schiff, who commands the 76th Precinct, recently informed the community council that the store has no surveillance cameras installed in the crowded grocery, despite pleading with Trader Joe’s several times to install them.

DNAinfo.com New York reports that thefts include cash from a bag deliberately set up in a police sting, as well as a cell phone from a woman’s purse, according to sources and court documents.

So far, the store has declined to cooperate with the recommended policy. “Trader Joe’s, since they’ve opened, haven’t seem too concerned with what’s going on inside the store,” a police source told DNA. “They seem to have the attitude of whatever happens, happens.”

To combat the rash of larcenies, the precinct has increased foot patrol in front of the store and implemented a series of sting operations. A spokesperson for Trader Joe’s confirmed that the store does not have surveillance cameras within the facility, according to DNA.

Watch Your Pedal! Cops Keeping Watch For Hicks Street Speeding

Police have amped up speed enforcement on Hicks Street in Cobble Hill following complaints from residents about chronic speeding and too many accidents. As of May 16, officers put a new radar gun in service, handing out eight tickets in one day, according to DNAinfo.com.

A police source comments that many folks use Hicks Street “as a service road when the BQE gets backed up.” The Department of Transportation also installed a “Speed Limit: 30 mph” sign, with accompanying radar to deter speeders. Police officers will sporadically visit the area to enforce speeding on that street, DNA says.

Cobble Hill Association Honors Two For Community Service

The Cobble Hill Association will honor two historians at its annual spring meeting on Tuesday May 29. Local historian Francis Marrone and dedicated preservationist Christabel Gough will be receiving CHA’s annual “Cobble Hill Hero Awards.”

Park Slope resident Marrone (pictured) has offered numerous tours over the years, while working to develop a “History Wiki” for Cobble Hill. He teaches history at New York University and will be guiding another tour of Cobble Hill on June 9. Roy Sloane, president of the Cobble Hill Association, notes: “He is considered one of New York City’s best tour guides.”

Gough is an officer for the Society for the Architecture of the City, covering landmark hearings for the West Village. At the meeting, Gough will be speaking on the topic of “Can Cobble Hill avoid Manhattanization?” Sloane adds, “She was the first person I was introduced to when I joined the Cobble Hill Association. She has been one of the landmark lions of the West Village.”

Following the reception, CHA will be holding its annual election of officers for the executive board. The meeting and reception will take place May 29 at Christ Church, located on the corner of Clinton and Kane streets. The reception begins at 6 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.

Third-Annual Brooklyn Bridge Birthday Celebration At Brooklyn Tattoo May 27

How’d you like the Brooklyn Bridge generously sprawled across your back? The third-annual Brooklyn Bridge Birthday celebration will do the honors for you on Sunday May 27, 1-7 p.m., at the Brooklyn Tattoo & Urban Folk Art Gallery in Cobble Hill. To commemorate the 129th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge, a group art show and a special $29 rate on tattoos is scheduled.

The event planners note: “It is a time honored tattoo parlor tradition to commemorate an auspicious date or event with a themed tattoo.” Shops have long been inking $13 “13″ tattoos when that date falls on Friday the 13th, or $31 Halloween images on October 31.

And thus, Brooklyn Tattoo at 99 Smith Street, will again honor one of its biggest inspirations three days after the Bridge’s 129th anniversary on May 24. The Urban Folk Art Gallery, adjacent to the shop, will host a group art show commemorating the Bridge through the eyes of 20+ local painters illustrators, educators, photographers, comic book makers and tattooers, opening Friday, May 25, 7-11 p.m.

The Brooklyn Bridge tattoos draw from several flash (pre-drawn) images that evoke the spirit that has defined New York’s iconic skyline. Tattoos will be etched into your skin by Brooklyn Tattoo staff on a first come, first serve basis. Copies of the flash design sheets will also be available for purchase, as well as a limited edition book by Adam Suerte showcasing 50 Brooklyn Bridge tattoos he’s done in the past. And: Brooklyn Bridge t-shirts, pint and shot glasses, and other themed merch will be sold in the gallery, as usual.

The third-annual, two-part event is sponsored by Bar Great Harry at 280 Smith Street.

Booze & Books: NYC Lit Crawl Coming To Brooklyn For First Time May 19

The Brooklyn Lit Crawl beer-and-book festival, which stumbles through 13 Cobble Hill, Carroll Garden and Brooklyn Heights venues on Saturday May 19, 6-8 p.m., will comprise cocktails, trivia contests, book readings and special events along the way.

Venues include Zombie Hut (273 Smith Street), Knit Lit (253 Smith), People’s Republic of Brooklyn (247 Smith), BookCourt (163 Court Street), Last Exit (136 Atlantic Avenue) and the After Party at 8 p.m. at 61 Local (61 Bergen Street).

Special events include: * Armchair/Shotgun enacts a live old-timey radio show. * The Liars’ League NYC acts out the latest story by Mark Haddon, author of “The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Nighttime.” * The Cambridge Writers Workshop presents Literary Cabaret.

The inaugural NYC Lit Crawl took place in September 2008. Last year’s event in Manhattan drew more than 1,200 crawlers, enjoying 70+ authors at some 20 events. This is its first extension into Brooklyn. The full schedule is here, with all info here.

“Brooklyn is so literary, it seemed like a no-brainer,” founder Suzanne Russo tells the Brooklyn Paper. “There’s so many friendly venues and so much going on in the literary sphere there, we thought it’s really the place we should be. The venues are smaller, there’s an energy in Brooklyn, a creative spirit that’s more of a go with the flow, we’ll-do-whatever kind of thing.”

Invisible Dog Gallery Features Multi-Media Prune Nourry: Opening May 12

Saturday May 12 is the opening date for New York-based, Parisian-born artist & sculptor Prune Nourry’s “Holy River” exhibit at Cobble Hill’s Invisible Dog Gallery. The launch takes place 6-10 p.m., at 51 Bergen Street.

The show features the culmination of a three-year project on gender selection focused on India, which was first offered to the public in 2011 at the Holy Daughters exhibition in Paris. The multimedia exhibition comprises sculptures, installations, photographs and videos, which will take over the entire ground floor of the Invisible Dog.

Included in the opening night exhibition: Dance curated by Simon Dove (performed by Preeti Vasudevan),sound by Mitchell Yoshida, smell by Olivier Delcour and taste by Michael Hamilton of Kingswood.

NU Hotel Opens New Café

Just as another season of alfresco dining and drinking in the neighborhood is getting underway, a new sidewalk café opened for business yesterday at the NU Hotel Brooklyn.

Encompassing 416 square feet, the outdoor space has seating capacity for 30 patrons. Current hours of operation are from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., with food served until 11 p.m. Though it has yet to be officially named, the new establishment is already serving up a menu of tapas devised by Chef Jehangir Mehta, owner of Manhattan eateries Graffiti and Mehtaphor. Offerings include braised pineapple, lamb and pork belly buns and mustard seed shrimp with cucumber and yogurt sauce. A full lunch and dinner menu will be available later this month.

“We’re extremely thrilled to have one of the largest sidewalk cafés in Downtown Brooklyn opened for business and look forward to becoming a neighborhood destination spot,” NU Hotel General Manager Javier Egipciaco told us.

In addition to light fare, the sidewalk café also features an extensive selection of cocktails, thanks to the concurrent reopening of the hotel’s revamped bar space. The drink menu will vary by season, with original cocktail recipes concocted by Master Mixologist Milos Zica, principal bartender at Manhattan restaurant Employees Only.

A drink naming contest is currently being held to coincide with the opening of the café. A tequila-based signature cocktail is the focus of the competition, with a $100 bar tab to be awarded as the prize for the winning drink moniker. More details can be found on NU Hotel’s Facebook page.

Saturday, May 12: ‘Families First Spring Carnival’ In Cobble Hill

A petting zoo, rides, merry-go-round, dancing and plenty of eats will highlight the 2012 Families First Brooklyn Spring Carnival in Cobble Hill, Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event takes places on Baltic Street between Clinton and Court streets.

Rides are $2 apiece and an all-day pass is $25, benefitting the non-profit Families First organization, which offers classes for children 0-7, support groups for parents and parenting workshops. Families First is based in Cobble Hill at 250 Baltic Street.

Cobble Hill Tree Fund Hosts Annual Plant Sale Saturday April 28

The Cobble Hill Tree Fund is hosting its annual fundraising Plant Sale on Saturday April 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Cobble Hill Park at Clinton & Congress streets. In case of rain, the event moves to Sunday April 29.

A wide variety of annuals, herbs and perennials will be available, as well as geraniums and hanging baskets. For the kids, the Tree Fund will offer the Plant Identification Treasure Hunt in the park, with winners receiving a free plant. Information is also on-hand about the Cobble Hill Tree Fund and composting.

The Fund is dedicated to planting trees, providing education on the care of trees and the ongoing beautification of the community. Over a 50-year lifetime, a tree generates $31,250 worth of oxygen, provides $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycles $37,500 worth of water and controls $31,250 worth of soil erosion.
