Danish Fair is a Hit

November 18, 2012

This was the scene in Hilles Hall, Plymouth Church yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, as people kept coming in and lining up for the buffet of open faced sandwiches (as always, I particularly liked the briny little shrimp with mayonnaise and lettuce, although the country style pate with sweet pickled beets was also excellent). Carlsberg lager was a perfect accompaniment, and afterward there were apple fritters and pastry. (More photos and text after the jump.)

During our lunch Irene (left) and Julie conducted a lively auction of Danish goods to raise money for the Danish Seamen’s Church.

Having eaten our fill, we walked over to the Danish Seamen’s Church at 102 Willow Street (just south of Clark) to see what was on sale. Julemanden, the Danish Santa, was on the front steps to greet us. Inside, many shoppers were looking at Christmas ornaments, toys, clogs, candy, cookies, and assorted delicacies. The line for food and beverage service in the back garden extended well into the church, so I resolved to return today (Sunday) for my glogg. The fair will be open today, at the Danish Seamen’s Church only, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Danish Seamen’s Church: Danish Christmas Fair November 17-18

November 12, 2012

The Danish Seamen’s Church in Brooklyn Heights at 102 Willow Street is hosting its annual Traditional Danish Christmas Fair Saturday, November 17, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, November 18, 11 a.m.-3 p.m..

Julie Slok shares with BHB: “You may have heard about delicious Danish open-faced sandwiches with their lavish combinations of fish and seafood, cheese, cold cuts and vegetables, garnished with fresh herbs, but have you ever tasted them? And how about sweet Danish puffy pastries served warm with powdered sugar and jam? Visit our Christmas Shop for Danish Christmas decorations and hand-made knitted shawls and baby clothes or buy Christmas presents to your family and friends from our collection of Danish design items donated by Danish companies based in New York City.”

The gift shop and courtyard bar serving hotdogs, Danish beer, warm pastries and mulled wine will be served at the Danish Seamen’s Church; while open-faced sandwiches and beer will be hosted by Plymouth Church at 75 Hicks Street. Note that the restaurant at Plymouth Church is open Saturday only, while the Danish Church is open both days.

All proceeds from the Christmas Fair go toward supporting the church and its activities. For more info, see here.
