And we thought the big news at Key Food on Montague Street was the announcement of a Dietz and Watson food truck visit on September 11. Now comes word via Twitter of a Justin Bieber piñata on sale at there.

This, friends, is something the whole world wants and needs- the chance to smack ol’ Biebs around. His seemingly insane behavior over the last year is enough to fuel your aggression and bloodlust while hacking at Canada’s most hated export (yes, we’re including Rob Ford in our consideration).

Just in time for Opening Day, Yankee fans from Brooklyn Heights and beyond wax poetic about Captain Derek Jeter in a revamped version of Walt Whitman’s “O Captain! My Captain!” directed by BHB’s Heather Quinlan. (Who would like it to be known that she is a Mets fan.) Featuring scenes from Brooklyn Bridge Park, Grace Church, and Cobble Hill’s Henry Public. Watch and enjoy, and may the best team win.

Karl Junkersfeld writes this about his new video:

Last weekend was the last opportunity to tour the construction of the new Governors Island Park Site. This park is especially relevant to Brooklyn Heights residents in that it is basically an extension of Pier 6 BBP, via free ferry, and offers an assortment of great public activities from which to chose.

Top on my list is the installation of 50 hammocks among 1500 newly planted trees. Being extremely lazy, this is basically nirvana for me. If they can manage to incorporate food and beverage service delivery to individual hammocks, it will become my second home.

Looking for something to do with your summertime guests? Or want to see Brooklyn from two wheels instead of four? Dutch transplant Frank Muller has just the thing—Bikelyn, a series of tours given Mondays and Tuesdays each week (with private tours available upon request).

Muller has taken to his new city rather quickly—after moving here last year, he’s already become a licensed NYC tour guide and launched Bikelyn in part to flex his local knowledge. And Muller’s heritage makes bike tours a natural extension. “In Holland, you learn how to ride a bike as soon as you learn to walk. It’s not cultural like it is here. It’s just the same as buying a car.”

You can BYOB or rent a bike from Rolling Orange Bikes in Cobble Hill, where the tour begins. Monday’s tours are Williamsburg in the morning, and Red Hook in the afternoon; Tuesday’s tours are Park Slope & Prospect Park in the morning and Brooklyn Heights & DUMBO in the afternoon. For private tours, a minimum of four people are requested. Depending on your interests, Muller also makes some food stops, like Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies in Red Hook. And if you book a tour for morning and afternoon, Muller will in a free lunch at Moo Burger.

More information is on Bikelyn’s site and Facebook page. Morning tours are $49 and afternoon are $39.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy is having “Sunset Ohana,” its 14th annual (which seems to go back to when the Park was still a gleam in some local citizens’ eyes) sunset party at Pier 1 on Thursday, June 6 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. This year the theme is Hawaiian.

Our little slice of Hawaii on the Brooklyn waterfront will include authentic Hawaiian steel guitars and classic surf music, tasty island treats, luau lawn games, a tropical specialty cocktail, hula sessions, and much more. Be sure to wear your most colorful shirt!

Among the “tasty island treats” will be “spam sliders with green papaya slaw.” Can’t wait! (I’m not kidding.)

Following the reopening of Red Hook’s Fairway Market March 1—which was all but wiped out by October’s Hurricane Sandy—there’s more good news for the borough. Heights locals looking to hop the R train for Coney Island’s seasonal goodies now have an official green light. Last Sunday, the Luna Park rides reopened, after being washed over with 5 feet of seawater.

The BK Chamber of Commerce shares that “Coney Island’s colorful rides only just emerged from an extensive rehabilitation. Workers were still finishing the repairs when families began to crowd the entrances on Sunday morning.”

Alberto Zamperla, CEO of the firm that operates Luna Park, tells the New York Times, which covered the reopening, “Our commitment after the hurricane, from Day 1, was to be ready on time for this event.” The rehab included everything from replacing electrical systems to dumping go-carts brined in seawater.

In attendance for opening day were state Senator Charles E. Schumer and Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz.

Luna is one of two privately owned amusement parks that opened in Coney Island on Sunday. Much more in the NYT story.

Hill Country Barbecue is slated to open this fall at 345 Adams Street, alongside the Downtown Brooklyn border’s other recently opened eateries: Shake Shack, Potbelly and Panera Bread. Muss Development is converting the former government offices into new retail and condo space. According to developer Joshua L. Muss: “Adding a restaurant of this caliber to our retail tenants will elevate our property here and blend perfectly with the continued evolution of the entire neighborhood.”

The 10,000-square-foot Texas-themed BBQ restaurant will offer dry-rub style meats, an in-house meat-smoke room, beer-braised cowboy pinto beans and boneless prime rib, along with “American Roots” live country music most every night. It already has two locations in Manhattan and one in Washington, D.C.

The arrival of Hill Country is a change of course from BHB’s September 2012 report that the locale would house American BBQ and Beer Co., which was originally scheduled to open in April 2013.

In addition, we reported then of an alleged signed lease in the building for Sugar and Plumm, a combination restaurant, ice cream parlor & chocolate retailer.

Red Hook’s Fairway Market reopened with a celebration that began at 7:30 a.m. on Friday with a foodie event to remember,” with food and product demos, giveaways and appearances from Miss America Mallory Hytes (who lives in Brooklyn) and Borough Prez Marty Markowitz.

Among improvements to the grocery post-Sandy—which decimated the 52,000sf waterfront store with 5 feet of water—are wider aisles, no dead ends in produce, entire store is easier to navigate, bakery is three times larger, a new cafe with enhanced offerings, meat & seafood easier to shop and a self-serve meat aisle across from the butcher counter.

In addition, a new expanded bulk section now comprises 198 items, including granola, nuts & seeds, grains & beans, natural candy and more.

The store was packed all weekend, here’s the Tale of the Tweets from opening day onward:

A lucky kid from the audience will be chosen to flip the switch and illuminate the 40-foot-tall balsam fir, which Time Out New York hailed as one of the city’s holiday trees “worth seeking out on a cold winter’s night.” The tree will sparkle with holiday colors each night through the holiday season. Brooklynite Adriana Louise of NBC’s “The Voice” will provide entertainment and sing her favorite Christmas song. Free holiday refreshments will be served, and Santa is also rumored to be stopping by. As much as Christmas trees are a seasonal tradition, so is the presence of Patti Romp and her son Tim in front of Key Food at 102 Montague Street. The Middlebury, Vermont-based pair has been selling trees in Brooklyn Heights for years, and have become such a part of the neighborhood that BHB’s Karl Junkersfeld interviewed them exactly one year ago here. In addition, the Romps have fostered such acclaim for their goods that The New York Times profiled the family here.

They were a great success last year, so our Brooklyn Heights neighbors, David Fuller and Judith Jarosz of Theater 2020, are presenting holiday events on the next two weekends. Both will be happening at St. Charles Borromeo, 21 Sidney Place. The first, on this coming Sunday, December 2, starting at 3:00 p.m. will be A Merry Joyful Noise, featuring the group RPM:

The group features performers Mary Lou Barber, John Canary (& Piano), Paula Hoza, Luisa Tedoff & Tim Weiss (& Guitar), from the Broadway, Cabaret & Indie Theater community. Admission [suggested donation $20, no one will be turned away] includes an optional sing-a-long on some of the classics & a reception with the artists immediately following the concert. Great for the whole family.

The second event, on Saturday, December 8, also starting at 3:00 p.m., will be A Radio Christmas Carol, “Charles Dickens’ Christmas Classic Performed as a Radio Play complete with Foley Artist Sound Effects.” Again, admission is a suggested donation of $20, but no one will be turned away. This was the scene in Hilles Hall, Plymouth Church yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, as people kept coming in and lining up for the buffet of open faced sandwiches (as always, I particularly liked the briny little shrimp with mayonnaise and lettuce, although the country style pate with sweet pickled beets was also excellent). Carlsberg lager was a perfect accompaniment, and afterward there were apple fritters and pastry. (More photos and text after the jump.)

During our lunch Irene (left) and Julie conducted a lively auction of Danish goods to raise money for the Danish Seamen’s Church.

Having eaten our fill, we walked over to the Danish Seamen’s Church at 102 Willow Street (just south of Clark) to see what was on sale. Julemanden, the Danish Santa, was on the front steps to greet us. Inside, many shoppers were looking at Christmas ornaments, toys, clogs, candy, cookies, and assorted delicacies. The line for food and beverage service in the back garden extended well into the church, so I resolved to return today (Sunday) for my glogg. The fair will be open today, at the Danish Seamen’s Church only, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Nice Weather This Weekend; Anything to Do?http://brooklynbugle.com/2012/11/09/nice-weather-this-weekend-anything-to-do/ http://brooklynbugle.com/2012/11/09/nice-weather-this-weekend-anything-to-do/#comments Fri, 09 Nov 2012 04:50:21 +0000 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/?p=51642 (via Brooklyn Heights Blog)

The weather forecast is encouraging, but with so many institutions, like Bargemisic, which is in good physical shape but still lacks Con Ed power, coping with the aftermath of the Sandy/nor’easter one-two punch, what is there to do if you’re in town? There’s the penultimate Smorgasburg of the season this Sunday, November 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Tobacco Warehouse, Water Street at New Dock Street in the Fulton Ferry Historic District (I once described it as being in DUMBO and caught holy heck from the Fulton Ferry Landing Association). The final Smorgasburg of the season will be the following Sunday, November 18.

Brooklyn Heights Cinema, 70 Henry Street (corner of Orange) will be showing The Sessions and A Late Quartet. Showtimes are here.

The Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street (corner of Clinton) will have another of its tours of the Society’s historic building on Saturday, November 10, starting at 3:00 p.m. Details are here. Looking ahead to Thursday, November 15, starting at 7:00 p.m., BHS will present a lecture by independent scholar and author Andrew Coe, “Spilt Milk: the Bloody Food Rackets of 20th Century New York,” about how gangsters controlled much of food distribution in New York City in the first half of the past century. Details are here.

Know of anything else interesting happening in Brooklyn Heights or nearby this weekend or in the near future? Add a comment to this post.

Tuesday evening the annual sea of seasonal purple lights went up along Montague Street, providing a festive respite from the coming cold. This is a happy thing, unless, of course, you happen to suffer from the effects of Porphyrophobia, fear of the color purple. Enjoy! (CT)

Looking for a joint in central Brooklyn Heights to raise a celebratory champagne toast—or to drown your sorrows—on Election Night this Tuesday, November 6? There’s nowhere in Brooklyn Heights that stays open as late as Custom House at 139 Montague Street, which confirms it will be airing election results all night long—literally. Last call is at 3:45 a.m. The 80-seat pub offers 16 tap beers with three flat screens TVs, while the kitchen offers such pub grub as (well-reviewed) burgers and wings, as well as Irish staples like Shepherd’s pie. (CT)

This morning was cloudy, but there was no rain and the temperature was…temperate, so conditions were just about ideal for the Brooklyn Heights Halloween Parade. Photo (click to enlarge): kids in costumes and parents, many also costumed, gathered in the Pierrepont Playground before the parade. More photos and text after the jump.

Borough Prexy Marty Markowitz handed out candy. “The more you eat, the less I do.”

Heather White, of the BHPC, organized the Parade.

The parade gets underway.

Halloween Horror: Author L.V. Author L.V. Salazar’s “The Ghosts Of Brooklyn” offers spooky tales of a “house of suicides” in Brooklyn Heights, demonic wolves in Prospect Park and a coven of sperm-stealing witches in DUMBO. Writer Natalie O’Neill spoke with the self-proclaimed ghost specialist in The Brooklyn Paper.

In the piece, he describes “ghosts” as such: “Imagine two rooms connected by a revolving door. One is life and the other is afterlife. A ghost gets stuck in the revolving doors. They didn’t fulfill their purpose in this world—or something terrible & tragic happened—so they go around in circles for eternity.”

In his book of ghost stories, among other wicked happenings, a man bursts into flames in Brooklyn Heights. Fun! Read O’Neill’s interview here.

BBP’s Pier 5 Aims For Late Fall 2012 Completion: Then There Was Turfhttp://brooklynbugle.com/2012/10/22/bbps-pier-5-aims-for-late-fall-2012-completion-then-there-was-turf/ http://brooklynbugle.com/2012/10/22/bbps-pier-5-aims-for-late-fall-2012-completion-then-there-was-turf/#comments Mon, 22 Oct 2012 13:00:21 +0000 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/?p=49537 (via Brooklyn Heights Blog)

As Brooklyn Bridge Park pushes for late Fall 2012 completion of Pier 5, there couldn’t be any greener a sign of progress than the artificial turf that was put in place over the past week. According to signage that lines the Promenade: “The 5-acre section, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, will feature three synthetic turf playing fields, a waterfront promenade, a picnic peninsula with barbecues, a playground for younger children and fishing stations. Benches and picnic tables constructed of salvaged wood will be placed throughout the pier. A portion of the park’s greenway will also be completed and connect to the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.”

Meanwhile, the Squibb Park Bridge spanning Furman Street—which provides a connection at Pier 1—is also slated for completion before year’s end, according to the Brooklyn Bridge Park website. More pics below the jump. (Photos: Chuck Taylor)
