Tuesday evening the annual sea of seasonal purple lights went up along Montague Street, providing a festive respite from the coming cold. This is a happy thing, unless, of course, you happen to suffer from the effects of Porphyrophobia, fear of the color purple. Enjoy! (CT)

This morning was cloudy, but there was no rain and the temperature was…temperate, so conditions were just about ideal for the Brooklyn Heights Halloween Parade. Author L.V. Salazar’s “The Ghosts Of Brooklyn” offers spooky tales of a “house of suicides” in Brooklyn Heights, demonic wolves in Prospect Park and a coven of sperm-stealing witches in DUMBO. Writer Natalie O’Neill spoke with the self-proclaimed ghost specialist in The Brooklyn Paper.
In the piece, he describes “ghosts” as such: “Imagine two rooms connected by a revolving door. One is life and the other is afterlife. A ghost gets stuck in the revolving doors. They didn’t fulfill their purpose in this world—or something terrible & tragic happened—so they go around in circles for eternity.”

As Brooklyn Bridge Park pushes for late Fall 2012 completion of Pier 5, there couldn’t be any greener a sign of progress than the artificial turf that was put in place over the past week. According to signage that lines the Promenade: “The 5-acre section, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, will feature three synthetic turf playing fields, a waterfront promenade, a picnic peninsula with barbecues, a playground for younger children and fishing stations. Benches and picnic tables constructed of salvaged wood will be placed throughout the pier. A portion of the park’s greenway will also be completed and connect to the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.”
Meanwhile, the Squibb Park Bridge spanning Furman Street—which provides a connection at Pier 1—is also slated for completion before year’s end, according to the Brooklyn Bridge Park website. More pics below the jump. (Photos: Chuck Taylor)

The Annual Brooklyn Heights Halloween Parade takes place Saturday, October 27 at 10 a.m. at the Pierrepont Playground, between Pierrepont Place, Pierrepont Street and the Promenade. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the Brooklyn Heights Playground Committee.
“Bring your little ghouls and goblins to join in the fun and show off their best costumes!” A bake sale will benefit the Heights Playground Committee, along with a professional photographer available to take photos of the kids, and face painters to ensure they look their best. (Rain date is October 28.)

The Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street (Corner of Clinton) will host an Oktoberfest tomorrow evening (Thursday, October 18) from 6:00 to 8:00. The Brooklyn Heights Cinema, 70 Henry Street, is adding standup comedy to its growing roster of special events. The next “Brooklyn Heights Comedy Nights” is tonight, Wednesday, October 17, at 9 p.m., featuring Subhah Agarwal, Gabe Morales, Adam Oliensis & Kevin J. Williams. Admission is $10.
Next month’s yuks are scheduled for Wednesday, November 21. The lineup is curated and hosted by comedian Shelly Colman, who approached BHC owner Kenn Lowy about expanding the theater’s live offerings.
