Brooklyn Book Festival Next Sunday, September 21

The ninth annual Brooklyn Book Festival will be on Sunday, September 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m at Borough Hall and Columbus Park (immediately north of Borough Hall). There will be readings by and discussions with writers, readings and activities for children, and books for sale. There’s more information here.

During the coming week and the Monday following the Festival there will be “Bookend” events held in various venues around the Borough. Among these venues are Book Court, Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Historical Society, DUMBO Sky, the Powerhouse Arena, Smack Mellon Gallery, St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church, St. Ann’s School, and Vineapple. Grace & Spiritus Chorale Presents “Missa Pangea” at St. Ann’s Church Sunday

The Grace & Spiritus Chorale of Brooklyn (photo) will present “Missa Pangea,” a concert featuring three distinct versions of the Mass from three continents, this coming Sunday, January 27, starting at 4:00 p.m., at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church, Clinton and Montague streets. The program includes the “Coronation Mass” by Mozart, the Canadian composer Ruth Watson Henderson’s “Missa Brevis,” and “Missa Luba,” a Mass setting based on Congolese folk tunes. The South African singer Peter Ncanywa will sing tenor solo on “Missa Luba,” which will also be accompanied by African drummers and St. Ann’s School dancers. Tickets are $15 ($12 for seniors and students) and may be purchased here.

There will also be performances of “Missa Pangea” on Friday evening, January 25, starting at 7:00, at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 286-88 Seventh Avenue (at Seventh Street), and on Saturday evening, January 26, also at 7:00, at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, 85 South Oxford Street.

Vampire Weekend Headlines Concert for Sandy Relief at St. Ann’s Saturday

Update: the Eventbrite website now says the concert is sold out.

According to Entertainment Weekly:

This Saturday, Nov. 17, Vampire Weekend, Real Estate, members of the Walkmen and Dirty Projectors, and others will perform acoustic sets at St. Ann & The Holy Trinity, an Episcopal church in Brooklyn Heights, with all proceeds going to Occupy Sandy. There’s no set ticket price, but the organization suggests a minimum donation of $30.
