New ‘Out Of The Closet Thrift Store’ In Boerum Hill Offers AIDS Services Throughout The Borough

July 26, 2012

Out of the Closet Thrift Store has opened its newest location in Boerum Hill, at 475 Atlantic Avenue. The destination benefits the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Regional Director Adam Ouderkirk tells DNAInfo.com that the shop will work in the community with other AIDS agencies to provide testing, information and treatment in the borough.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation was founded in 1987 by a group of men in Los Angeles who saw their friends dying of AIDS in the streets and in the hallways of hospitals. They wanted to provide a place to die with dignity and sponsored California legislation that enabled creation of the first licensed HIV/AIDS facility for the terminally ill in that state. Today the Foundation is the largest provider of HIV/AIDS medication in the U.S., according to their website. They also provide medicine and advocacy to people in 22 countries.

Out of the Closet was created to benefit the foundation. Community members donate clothing and accessories and for every item sold, 96 cents of each dollar benefits AIDS prevention and advocacy programs and services. There are several branches in San Francisco and Los Angeles, plus stores in Miami, Amsterdam… and now Brooklyn.

Ouderkirk tells DNAInfo, “We want the Brooklyn community to really own the store and feel that its theirs.” There will be free and confidential HIV testing every day in the store, plus a pharmacy that provides HIV medications.

According to Ouderkirk, while the Brooklyn borough has the third-highest AIDS/HIV rates after Manhattan and the Bronx, it also offers the fewest amount of services.
“Brooklyn was an important place for us to be. And being near the Atlantic Terminal, hopefully people from all over Brooklyn will have access to the store and its services.”

The store’s manager is Carlos Cartayas, who is known as “Peanut.” He says, “We have had several boxes of clothes donated from L.A. but none so far from the Brooklyn. I don’t think people know we’re here yet.” To donate, call 718-614-5949 or drop off clothes any weekday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m at 475 Atlantic Avenue.

UPDATE: Fallen Carroll Gardens Townhouse To Be Demolished

July 7, 2012

Following the collapse of about half of a three-story brownstone in Carroll Gardens Monday, the city will demolish the 50-foot-wide structure next to PS 58 Elementary School.

Much of the eastern wall of 241 Carroll Street (between Court and Smith streets) came down at 1:13 a.m. Monday, exposing the interior of the regal brownstone. A gash extended from roof-to-ground, and included much of the home’s south wall as well, according to AP. Miraculously, no one was injured.

By Tuesday, a massive crane was on-site, along with workers knocking away at the side of the building with hand tools, according to the South Brooklyn Post. FDNY, police, city employees and neighbors also surveyed the damage. Homes adjacent to the fallen brownstone have been evacuated until after demolition is completed.

While the cause of the collapse is still unknown, the city believes age and natural deterioration are to blame, as the home dates to the mid 1800s. In the mid 1900s, the adjoining building was demolished to make way for PS 58, which also could have destabilized the structure.

Cobble Hill’s Battersby Fosters NYT Love

June 29, 2012

“Battersby Is Poised For The New Brooklyn.” That’s the headline in a generally flattering New York Times restaurant review for “elbow to elbow” intimate Cobble Hill eatery Battersby at 255 Smith Street and Douglass Street, owned by Joseph Ogrodnek and Walker Stern. Quote: “At its best, the food at Battersby is thoughtful, poised, occasionally revelatory.”

Regarding the restaurant’s lamb, NYT reporter Ligaya Mishan muses, “This is a biography of lamb, intimate in its details. You sense that the person who cooked it broke down the animal himself. You do not coo over such a plate; you bow your head, in grace.” The menu of about a dozen dishes changes as often as three times a week, she reports.

Recommended on the menu are the kale salad, crab parfait, quinoa with herbs and lettuces, octopus and chorizo, branzino, lamb and spontaneous tasting menu. Prices range from $7 to $29, with a tasting menu for $65-$85.

One more amusing note… Mishan suggests that Smith Street is “a formerly insalubrious strip that is now just a Marc Jacobs away from becoming Brooklyn’s Bleecker.”

Booze & Books: NYC Lit Crawl Coming To Brooklyn For First Time May 19

May 13, 2012

The Brooklyn Lit Crawl beer-and-book festival, which stumbles through 13 Cobble Hill, Carroll Garden and Brooklyn Heights venues on Saturday May 19, 6-8 p.m., will comprise cocktails, trivia contests, book readings and special events along the way.

Venues include Zombie Hut (273 Smith Street), Knit Lit (253 Smith), People’s Republic of Brooklyn (247 Smith), BookCourt (163 Court Street), Last Exit (136 Atlantic Avenue) and the After Party at 8 p.m. at 61 Local (61 Bergen Street).

Special events include: * Armchair/Shotgun enacts a live old-timey radio show. * The Liars’ League NYC acts out the latest story by Mark Haddon, author of “The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Nighttime.” * The Cambridge Writers Workshop presents Literary Cabaret.

The inaugural NYC Lit Crawl took place in September 2008. Last year’s event in Manhattan drew more than 1,200 crawlers, enjoying 70+ authors at some 20 events. This is its first extension into Brooklyn. The full schedule is here, with all info here.

“Brooklyn is so literary, it seemed like a no-brainer,” founder Suzanne Russo tells the Brooklyn Paper. “There’s so many friendly venues and so much going on in the literary sphere there, we thought it’s really the place we should be. The venues are smaller, there’s an energy in Brooklyn, a creative spirit that’s more of a go with the flow, we’ll-do-whatever kind of thing.”
