“Frankenstorm” Threatens Area for Halloween

According to CBS News:

An unusual nasty mix of a hurricane [Sandy] and a winter storm that forecasters are now calling “Frankenstorm” is likely to blast most of the East Coast next week, focusing the worst of its weather mayhem around New York City and New Jersey.

Forecasters say it’s almost certain that the bad stuff, which will include “steady gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow” will start late Sunday and could continue through Halloween, which is Wednesday.

D.I. Mark DiPaolo Leaving 84th Precinct Command for New Assignment

Deputy Inspector Mark DiPaolo, who has served as Commanding Officer of the 84th Precinct for the past four years, is being reassigned by the NYPD to command the 90th Precinct, in Williamsburg. His successor at the 84th will be Captain Maximo Tolentino.

D.I. DiPaolo offered these parting words:

Though I am excited about the challenges and tasks of [my new] assignment , I would be remiss in not admitting that I will miss the Precinct and community that I have called home for the last four years. I would like to thank all the members of the community for their past cooperation and help in reducing crime. I will miss the bonds and relationships that were formed. I truly appreciated the partnership created that is needed to be successful in running a Police Precinct. I would sincerely like to thank members of the community for the their sympathy and support during the tragic event that took the life of P.O. Alain Schaberger.
In closing, I am comforted by the fact that the 84th Precinct is getting a great choice in Captain Maximo Tolentino as its new Commanding Officer. I have no doubt that with the assistance of Precinct personnel and this wonderful community there will be continued success in our goal to always make this community a safer place to work and live.

Grace Church Celebrates Paul Olson’s 20 Years’ Service With Party, New Hymn

Paul Richard Olson has completed twenty years’ service as Organist and Choirmaster at Grace Church, as well as Music Specialist at Grace Church School (he is shown in the photo giving an introductory lesson on the church’s Austin Organ). Today, there was a celebratory brunch in the church’s Guild Hall to mark the occasion. As a special honor to Paul, the hymnist Jacque B. Jones, a member of Plymouth Church, wrote the lyrics to a new hymn, “As Starlight Warms to Daybreak,” which she set to a Swedish melody in recognition of Paul’s Scandinavian heritage. There’s a video of the assembled multitude singing the hymn after the jump.

Piano accompaniment was provided by Craig Whitney, retired New York Times editor and Grace Church parishioner, as well as author of All the Stops: the Glorious Pipe Organ and its American Masters, a must read for fans of the King of Instruments.

Old Time Music at BHS Oktoberfest

Brooklyn has come to be quite a scene for old time string band music of the type indigenous to Appalachia and the Piedmont, from northern Alabama and Georgia up to Nova Scotia. At Thursday’s Oktoberfest, Stephanie Jenkins of Pearly Snaps and Luke Richardson provided some fine fiddle, banjo, and guitar music in the Brooklyn Historical Society’s Othmer Library. If you were there, I was th old fool in the corner who couldn’t keep from dancing. Video after the jump.

Oktoberfest at Brooklyn Historical Society Tomorrow Evening

The Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street (Corner of Clinton) will host an Oktoberfest tomorrow evening (Thursday, October 18) from 6:00 to 8:00. You will be able to sample Brooklyn Brewery’s new Oktoberfest beer, and enjoy a performance by a local artist to be announced. Admission is free, but you must RSVP here. Council Member Levin Wants Your Advice on How to Spend $1 Million

City Council Member Stephen Levin has a kitty of $1 million in “discretionary capital funding” to spend in his district, which includes Brooklyn Heights, and he’s asking his constituents for advice on how to spend it. So, he’s called a meeting fro Wednesday evening, October 17 (by the time you read this, that probably means “this evening”) from 6:00 to 9:00, at St. Francis College, 180 Remsen Street, to hear your ideas.

According to the Brooklyn Heights Association:

Examples of the type of eligible project that might result from the participatory budgeting effort are: buying new library collections, new playground equipment for a park, computers for schools, a school or community space renovation, new street furniture (trash cans, benches, bike racks, street lamps), public art, intersection safety improvements.

The “viable” projects that come from this and similar assemblies will be put on a ballot, and all residents of the council district 16 or older will be allowed to vote on them. Those receiving the most votes, up to a total of $1 million, will be assured of a place on the City’s forthcoming capital budget to be adopted next spring.

Four four legged friends enjoy the sunshine and each others’ company on a bench in front of the Granite Prospect on Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park. On the right is Wellington, named best tail wagger at this year’s Brooklyn Heights Association Dog Show. Next to him, in pink harness, is neighbor and occasional walking companion Sadie. No Garbage Pick-Up Monday (10/8)

October 7, 2012

The Brooklyn Heights Association alerts us to the fact that there will be no garbage pick-up tomorrow, Monday, October 8, because of the Columbus Day holiday. Garbage should be held back until late Tuesday night; it will be picked up Wednesday. Those whose recyclables are normally picked up on Monday will need to wait for the following Monday, October 15, for recyclables to be picked up.

First Hints of Fall Foliage on Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park

This afternoon your correspondent took a walk down to Pier 1, Brooklyn Heights Park, and was greeted by some scenes of early fall. Sumac leaves were turning red and yellow (photo). More photos and text after the jump.

This scene is looking north from near the park entrance at the foot of Doughty Street, toward the Manhattan Bridge (we’re looking under the Brooklyn Bridge).
