Brooklyn Heights Cinema Seeks Not-For-Profit Status

August 29, 2012

According to The Brooklyn Paper, Kenn Lowy, owner of the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, has decided to apply to convert it to not-for-profit status. This will give it the flexibility to apply for arts grants and accept tax deductible donations, which will be important given the need to install new digital projectors in order to show movies that are now being released only in that format. It will also enable the Cinema to present more works by local filmmakers as well as concerts by up-and-coming musicians.

The building now housing the Cinema is slated for demolition, although the landowner will provide space for a one screen theater in the new building to be constructed on the site. Lowy is looking for space for a one screen annex to continue presenting movies while the new building is under construction. we’ll keep you advised of developments.

Karl on Squibb Park Bridge Progress

August 24, 2012

Mr. J. is a fan of all things Brooklyn Bridge Park. In the video (see after the jump) he’s given us some glimpses of progress in construction of the pedestrian bridge that will connect Squibb Park, just below Columbia Heights near the path that leads from Middagh Street, with Brooklyn Bridge Park. The poured concrete supports that will hold the wooden bridge aloft are being installed at the BBP level. He also shows work being done to improve the access ramp from the sidewalk at Columbia Heights down to Squibb Park. Sections of the wooden bridge are being fabricated offsite; we look forward to their arrival.

Brunch at Colonie

August 20, 2012

This past February at the Grace Church Winterfair Silent Auction my wife bid on, and won, brunch for two at Colonie, 127 Atlantic Avenue (between Clinton and Henry). We finally got around to doing it today. We arrived at around 11:30 (brunch there starts at 11:00) and found all tables occupied (Colonie only takes reservations for parties of five or more) but were offered seats at a counter facing the open kitchen. This proved to be a lucky circumstance, as we enjoyed watching the kitchen crew at work and later, when the pace of orders slowed, some conversation. My wife ordered the biscuit Benedict (see photo, and menu here–scroll down to brunch). Judging by the number of times I heard the sous-chef call out “Benny!” I take it this is the most popular brunch item. More photos and text after the jump.

My wife was pleased by her choice. The egg was, she said, the most perfectly poached she had ever seen, and the seasoning was just right. The biscuit was excellent. I took a sample, and my only dissent was that the “heritage ham” was less flavorful than I expected.

I chose the duck hash (photo at left) and had no regrets. The duck was sliced in thin strips, and very savory, the potatoes were done to the right degree of crunchiness, and the seasoning was just so. There was another of the perfectly poached eggs. I washed it down with a “bloody Caesar,” a bloody Mary made with Clamato juice.

Here’s the crew who made it all so well. As we finished our meal and the pace of orders decreased, we were able to have some enjoyable conversation about cooking and baseball. I call them the “anything but the Yankees” crew–note the Red Sox (to my wife’s delight) and Orioles caps.

Bistricer Taking Minimalist Approach to Bossert Conversion?

August 8, 2012

Your correspondent wished he could attend today’s real estate luncheon at the Brooklyn Historical Society, but a day job interfered. Fortunately, The Real Deal was on hand to give us the straight skinny. First off: very few changes are being made to the interior, “which w[as] meticulously maintained by the [Jehovah’s] Witnesses [the building’s previous owners].” Mostly, new owner David Bistricer said, what is going on is upgrading electricity and plumbing. What is being done is so unobtrusive that it doesn’t bother the four long-term residents of the building who predate the Witnesses’ acquisition of it and whose continued right to live there is guaranteed by law.

Bistricer also said that any rooftop lounge would be “private.” We’re not sure what this means. Will it be accessible to hotel guests only, or be a private club, like the Casino? In our view, this would be unfortunate. Many of us would like to have a neighborhood “Top of the Mark” where we and our guests, visitors to the neighborhood, and hotel guests, could enjoy drinks, low volume music, and amazing views.
