Dogs on a Bench, a Bird in Hand

October 10, 2012

Four four legged friends enjoy the sunshine and each others’ company on a bench in front of the Granite Prospect on Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park. On the right is Wellington, named best tail wagger at this year’s Brooklyn Heights Association Dog Show. Next to him, in pink harness, is neighbor and occasional walking companion Sadie. We don’t know the names of the two at the left, who seem to be becoming very good friends. Perhaps someone can help. (Click on image to enlarge.) Another photo after the jump.

Tweety the pigeon, found as a baby in a trash can, rests contented in the hands of rescuer Helen after receiving her blessing at Grace Church on Sunday evening.

First Hints of Fall Foliage on Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park

October 7, 2012

This afternoon your correspondent took a walk down to Pier 1, Brooklyn Heights Park, and was greeted by some scenes of early fall. Sumac leaves were turning red and yellow (photo). More photos and text after the jump.

This scene is looking north from near the park entrance at the foot of Doughty Street, toward the Manhattan Bridge (we’re looking under the Brooklyn Bridge).

The day closed with another gorgeous Brooklyn Heights sunset, seen from the Promenade.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Moves Ahead On Pier 2 & Pier 3 Uplands

September 26, 2012

Brooklyn Bridge Park offers an update on its progress: “Construction is moving forward on Pier 2 and the Pier 3 uplands. To facilitate these improvements, we have needed to make some accommodations. Most notably, a portion of the temporary greenway has shifted east directly adjacent to Furman Street. The new alignment begins just north of Pier 2 and continues south to Montague Street, where it connects with the existing path.”

The new alignment will be in place for the duration of BBP’s construction, which extends to Fall 2013. Temporary signage has been installed directing bikers and pedestrians to the new path at both the southern and northern entrances to the Park: “We thank you for your patience as we continue to build you more park.” (Photo: Julienne Schaer)

Piece By Piece: Squibb Pedestrian Bridge Timber Arrives On-Site

September 4, 2012

While piers for the upcoming Squibb Pedestrian Bridge arrived on site and were being installed two weeks ago, now the Brooklyn Bridge Park website shares that the first timber pieces of the suspension bridge have arrived on-site for installation. Each of the two main spans is 122 feet in length, and composed of black locust timber, “an excellent alternative to rainforest hardwoods.”

The bridge—which will connect Brooklyn Bridge Park to Squibb Park, just below Columbia Heights near the path that leads from Middagh Street—will be made of timber with galvanized steel connections, mesh panels and lit handrails, designed to blend in with the context of the existing industrial waterfront. The Squibb Bridge’s underslung suspension design is supported from below, opening views in all directions when crossing into the park. It is slated for completion early this fall.

Construction Ensues For BBP’s Squibb Park Bridge

August 25, 2012

Following Mr. Karl’s video progress report Thursday on the Squibb Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Facebook page featured its own pic Thursday sharing progress on the bridge, which will connect Brooklyn Heights to BBP: “Check out the first bridge pier being installed at the uplands of Pier 1. Looking forward to watching as Squibb Bridge is built!”

As Brownstoner reminds us, Squibb Bridge will connect Squibb Park, right off the neighborhood’s Columbia Heights, to Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier One, where the upcoming mega-hotel and condo complex are scheduled to be built. Construction began on the bridge this spring.
