Atlantic Avenue BID Wants Input About Best Potential Retail Tenants

October 17, 2012

The Brooklyn Heights Association is circulating a poll on behalf of the Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District (BID), asking area residents about the kind of businesses Atlantic Avenue needs “to be an even better neighborhood shopping street. The BID aims to bring in new businesses that will further enhance the mix of retail and variety of stores available in the community.”

Based on your feedback, Atlantic Avenue’s BID “will seek out the best possible tenants to fill vacant storefronts on the Avenue.” The online survey is here. In addition, a new website has been launched with updates on the avenue’s growing business and retail scene. Also follow on Facebook and Twitter. (Photo: Chuck Taylor)

Cobble Hill Residents Request Later Park Closure To Avoid Parking Tickets

October 15, 2012

Neighborhood residents are calling for a pushback on the closing time of Cobble Hill Park in an effort to reduce traffic tickets, following what the Brooklyn Paper deems “a mini-ticket blitz that (leaves) late-night visitors facing costly summonses.” A burgeoning group is fighting to extend the park’s curfew from 9 to 10 p.m. amid complaints that cops are issuing $250 tickets for “harmless after-hours activities,” bounded by Congress, Clinton & Henry streets and Verandah Place.

Community Board 6 recently met with members of the Cobble Hill Association to discuss the issue, insisting that later hours for the park would decrease the number of superfluous summonses. Detective Paul Grudzinski of the 76th Precinct counters, “We’re not looking to storm in 5 minutes after closing, then start writing tickets, but we have to enforce the rules fairly and across the board”—although he said that he supports the later curfew, which would also put the park in line with nearby Carroll Park’s hours. Cobble Hill’s Sugar Shop Hires Security Guards After Rash Of Robberies

September 13, 2012

Cobble Hill candy store Sugar Shop has hired two part-time security guards for $500 a week, after a rash of summer robberies. Former football linebacker Andre Young, 23 (pictured, right), is among those standing guard to make sure there are no repeats of an August 25 flash mob where 40 teens swiped Now and Later taffies, Pop Rocks and Nerds, according to The New York Daily News.

The owners of the Baltic Street business, Jennifer Bischoff and Sara Houchins, opened five months ago and never expected the store—which mainly sells high-end $9 chocolate bars and $10.99-per-pound jelly beans and gummies—to become a consistent crime target. Sugar Shop was also part of a July 4th burglary spree where a lone crook broke into several Cobble Hill businesses, including Dominic Cusimano funeral home on Court Street and Picnic baby clothes boutique on Amity Street, taking money and computers, the News reports.

Then came the August throng of shoplifters: Four days after the flash mob, a smaller group of teens visited the store stealing sweets. Troye Pryor, Young’s boss and owner of First Rate security, the firm hired by Sugar Shop, noted, “Times are different. It’s rough out there.”

Bischoff has complained to the 76th Precinct, asking cops to send out more foot patrols: “It’s rare to even see a cop car in this neighborhood. They are heavily watching Red Hook. There are more dangerous crimes happening in Red Hook, but we want to be safe, too.”

Avenue Ardor! 38th-Annual Atlantic Antic: Sunday, 9/30

September 4, 2012

The ever-entertaining end-of-summer Atlantic Antic—which brings madness, music and playful mayhem to a 10-block stretch of Atlantic Avenue, bordering Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill—will convene Sunday, September 30, noon to 6 p.m. Sponsored by the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation (AALDC), it offers 500+ retailers and pop-up shops pawning goodies, food, dancing, family fun and more, between Hicks & Fourth Avenue.

The 38th-annual Atlantic Antic is “much more than your average street festival,” organizers say. “The longstanding and well-loved celebration of a myriad of cultures crosses several historic neighborhoods and brings together a wide array of sights and sounds. The Antic is an exhilarating experience for the whole family.” Imagine: belly dancers, falafel, family sing-alongs and Homer & Mrs. Fink in their Brooklyn Bugle booth, all in a single setting.

This year’s theme is “Have it All on Atlantic: From the Waterfront to the Arena.” AALDC President Christian Haag declares, “In a year where Atlantic Avenue has grown exponentially, I am happy to say the Atlantic Antic has, too. Come again or for the first time and see why this is New York City’s greatest street fair.” For more about the Atlantic Antic, including directions and parking information, see here. The event will be held rain or shine (Photos: Chuck Taylor)
