State Assemblywoman Joan Millman: Bring Back B71 Bus; Sign the Petition

State Assemblywoman Joan Millman has started a petition drive on the website Change.org to restore service on the B71 bus along Union Street. She notes that this bus has been a valuable transportation resource for residents of the Columbia Street Waterfont District, Carroll Gardens, and Boerum Hill. She will be testifying at an MTA board meeting next week, and needs as many signatures as possible before next Tuesday, July 24. You can sign the petition here.

Touring the Ships at Piers 7 and 8

Yesterday your correspondent went to Piers 7 and 8 to view the ships docked there as part of OpSail 2012 and Fleet Week. Docked abreast at the foot of Pier 8 were the topsail schooners Etoile (left) and La Belle Poule, training ships for the French Navy. Behind them was the Armada de Mexico’s tall ship Cuauhtemoc.

Spain’s handsome four masted schooner Juan Sebastian de Elcano was docked on the north side of Pier 7.

Here is a close view of Elcano’s carved and gilded figurehead.

Docked behind Elcano was the Japan Defense Force destroyer Shirane.

Here is a view inside the wheelhouse of the Canadian destroyer Iroquois.

From Iroquois’ bridge, I could see the crowd lined up on Pier 6 to board the ferry to Governors Island.

Here is a back-lit view of Cuauhtemoc, showing her attractively draped sails.

New Eatery ‘Pok Pok’ Brings Adult Slushies To Columbia Street Waterfront

Imagine the childhood joy of a 7-Eleven slushie with the grown-up bliss of a little compulsory booze amid the concoction. A new restaurant on the Columbia Street waterfront, Pok Pok, run by James Beard award-winning chef Andy Ricker, is serving up the delectable beverages, courtesy of a barrel-shaped rapid-cooling contraption.

“It’s very unique,” manager Ryan Domingo tells the Brooklyn Paper. “People drink beer on ice in Thailand, but not like this.” The machine is reminiscent of those in wine stores that utilize a salt and ice solution around a bottle that chills it to perfection in about 4 minutes.

Pok Pok’s Bia Wun—or jelly beer—is made with low-alcohol content brews like Singha or Chang and served with a straw. The new restaurant, which originated in Portland and was named one of the 25 “Most Anticipated Restaurants of 2012″ in March by Eater, is located at 127 Columbia Street at Kane Street in the Columbia Waterfront District.
