Coney Island’s Luna Park Reopens After Hurricane Sandy’s Mayhem

March 26, 2013

Following the reopening of Red Hook’s Fairway Market March 1—which was all but wiped out by October’s Hurricane Sandy—there’s more good news for the borough. Heights locals looking to hop the R train for Coney Island’s seasonal goodies now have an official green light. Last Sunday, the Luna Park rides reopened, after being washed over with 5 feet of seawater.

The BK Chamber of Commerce shares that “Coney Island’s colorful rides only just emerged from an extensive rehabilitation. Workers were still finishing the repairs when families began to crowd the entrances on Sunday morning.”

Alberto Zamperla, CEO of the firm that operates Luna Park, tells the New York Times, which covered the reopening, “Our commitment after the hurricane, from Day 1, was to be ready on time for this event.” The rehab included everything from replacing electrical systems to dumping go-carts brined in seawater.

In attendance for opening day were state Senator Charles E. Schumer and Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz.

Luna is one of two privately owned amusement parks that opened in Coney Island on Sunday. Much more in the NYT story.

Hotel St. George Sign Returns To Henry Street In Brooklyn Heights

March 20, 2013

The iconic Hotel St. George sign on the corner of Henry and Clark Streets has been refurbished and returned to Brooklyn Heights this morning. Michael Correra at Michael Towne Wines and Spirits wrote us to say that the sign is looking great thanks to the hard work of the folks at Paul’s Signs.

BHB reader Chris Fohlin tweeted us a photo of the sign’s return this morning. Our Heather Quinlan is on her way to get more info….

UPDATE: And here I am, Heather Quinlan, with the latest sign news. According to Correra, “I think the sign is from 1933, though I don’t have any proof. What’s interesting is the man who repaired it said it had square bulbs, and they haven’t used square bulbs since the 1950s.” Correra also recommended a book New York Nights about the history of NYC signage. Featuring the Hotel St. George Sign, square bulbs and all.

SUNY Votes To Shut Down LICH

March 19, 2013

The SUNY Board of Trustees voted to close Long Island College Hospital today in a public meeting held in Westchester:

NY Daily News:  Shutting the 150-year-old Cobble Hill facility must be approved by the state Health Dept. and would take at least 90 days to complete. Layoff notices will go out to LICH’s 2000 employees “within days,” an official said.

“We are resource poor. We don’t have the financial sustenance to keep LICH open,” said SUNY chancellor Nancy Zimpher as SUNY trustees voted at the meeting held at state College at Purchase in Westchester.

More than 100 workers and former patients bused to the meeting by the nurses’ union chanted “The vote is fixed. Don’t close LICH” during the meeting.

Cobble Hill’s BookCourt Hosts Author Thea Goodman March 18

March 17, 2013

BookCourt at 163 Court Street in Cobble Hill will host Thea Goodman, author of “The Sunshine When She’s Gone,” with a reading, Q&A and signing on Monday, March 18 at 7 p.m. Drinks will be served!

“Her book is a fresh and funny debut novel about marriage and new parenting—about the love, longing and ambivalence exposed when a husband takes the baby on a highly unusual outing,” BookCourt tells CHB.

More about the book
When Veronica Reed wakes up one frigid January morning, two things are off—first of all, she has had a good night’s sleep, which hasn’t happened in months, and second, both her husband and her baby are gone. Grateful for the much-needed rest, Veronica doesn’t, at first, seriously question her husband’s trip out to breakfast with baby Clara. Little does she know, her spouse has fled lower Manhattan, with Clara, for some R&R in the Caribbean.

Told through alternating points of view, The Sunshine When She’s Gone explores the life-changing impact of parenthood on a couple as individuals and as partners. Thea Goodman brings us into intimacies made tense by sleep-deprivation and to losses and gains made more real by acknowledging them. Here is the story of a couple pushed to the edge and a desperate father’s attempt give them both space to breathe.

About the author
Thea Goodman has received the Columbia Fiction Award, a Pushcart Prize Special Mention and fellowships at Yaddo and Ragdale; her short stories have appeared in several journals, notably New England Review, Other Voices and Columbia. Born in New York City, she studied at Sarah Lawrence and earned her MFA from Brooklyn College, CUNY. She has taught writing at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and lives in Chicago with her husband and children.

Hill Country Barbecue Slated To Bring Down-Home Country To Adams Street

March 8, 2013

Hill Country Barbecue is slated to open this fall at 345 Adams Street, alongside the Downtown Brooklyn border’s other recently opened eateries: Shake Shack, Potbelly and Panera Bread. Muss Development is converting the former government offices into new retail and condo space. According to developer Joshua L. Muss: “Adding a restaurant of this caliber to our retail tenants will elevate our property here and blend perfectly with the continued evolution of the entire neighborhood.”

The 10,000-square-foot Texas-themed BBQ restaurant will offer dry-rub style meats, an in-house meat-smoke room, beer-braised cowboy pinto beans and boneless prime rib, along with “American Roots” live country music most every night. It already has two locations in Manhattan and one in Washington, D.C.

The arrival of Hill Country is a change of course from BHB’s September 2012 report that the locale would house American BBQ and Beer Co., which was originally scheduled to open in April 2013.

In addition, we reported then of an alleged signed lease in the building for Sugar and Plumm, a combination restaurant, ice cream parlor & chocolate retailer.

The Daily Show Ponders Dov Hikind Poor Purim Costume Choice of Blackface

February 27, 2013

The New York Observer covers the reaction of the Daily Show to NYS Assemblymember Dov Hickind’s “black basketball player” Purim costume.

Hikind who has totally defended his choice for the usually whimsical holiday telling the New York Times, “The main objective that I have is not to be recognizable. Of course the intention was not to offend anyone. That’s the last thing that I ever imagined that would happen, to be very honest. It never crossed my mind.”

Clearly he’s never heard of Ted Danson.

NYO: “If you live in the New York area, you may be familiar with State Assemblyman Dov Hikind,” the show’s host, Jon Stewart, began as he ticked off allegations of anti-Semitism Mr. Hikind has leveled against others. “Some of this may seem like a bit of an overreaction, but the guy is standing up for a group, whenever he feels this group has been unfairly maligned or held up for ridicule. So what’s he been up to lately?”

He played a clip of a local news broadcast covering the costume controversy, causing Mr. Stewart to lower his head and gasp, “Oh boy.”

After rattling off a few jokes, Mr. Stewart transitioned to a second segment where Jessica Williams, the show’s “Senior Purim Correspondent,” blasted Mr. Hikind and the Jewish community writ large for failing to pay enough respect to “the tenth most-important Jewish holiday there is.”
