Reader Report: Tree Down on Remsen, 3 Cars Damaged

November 8, 2012

This dispatch from a BHB reader:

A large tree just came down at approximately 9:50pm this evening on Remsen Street. It was growing right alongside the building at 33 Remsen and fell across the road on top of at least three cars, with one parked in front of 34 Remsen taking the brunt. A firefighter is already on the scene with a chainsaw at 10:05pm. The tree still had most of it’s leaves and, weighed down by the wet snow, it came down in a gust of wind. The root ball doesn’t appear to have damaged 33 Remsen, which is amazing given how close to the building it was growing.

Squadron Skates to Victory for Third Term in NY State Senate

November 8, 2012

It seems like only yesterday he was some punk “kid” challenging seemingly well ensconced 30 year incumbent Martin “Marty” Connor for the NYS Senate seat representing the 25th district. Last night Sen. Daniel Squadron trounced his GOP challenger Jacqueline Haro (who we literally cannot find one lick of info about):

Daniel Squadron (I) Dem 60,185 86.44%
Jacqueline Haro GOP 9,441 13.56%

Squadron posted this dispatch on Facebook after the victory: “I’m proud and grateful for the opportunity to continue representing our incredible district.”

Sandy Help For Jane’s Carousel Via Bake Sale Sunday, November 11

November 8, 2012

One of the most shared photos of Superstorm Sandy’s wrath in Brooklyn last week was of Jane’s Carousel in DUMBO surrounded by flood waters. We learned on Tuesday that its lovingly restored horses, benches and woodwork made it through the storm with little or no damage. However, Jane Walentas noted, “the basement that houses all the electronics was totally flooded.” She added, “We’re optimistic that the Carousel will be fine, but it will probably take some time to get it fully restored to happily prancing again.”

BHB received word from area resident Megan Reilly Cayten that she and a “group of parents and kids who love the carousel” will be holding a bake sale this Sunday (11/11) from 11am – 1pm to help raise funds for the carousel’s restoration.

Cayten tells us that Ms. Walentas was “touched” by the idea for the event and will be opening the carousel’s building to the group so they can stay warm while holding the fundraiser.

The carousel is reportedly in working condition but its organ and the electronics which power it need to be replaced. The immediate goal of the bake sale is to raise $175 dollars, Cayten says, to cover the cost of a CD player they’ll need to replace the organ until it is back in working condition.

Jane’s Carousel opened in its current location in September 2011 amidst controversy regarding its placement in Brooklyn Bridge Park. It is currently maintained by the non-profit group Friends of Jane’s Carousel.

Follow-Up: Nate Silver Nails All 50 States In Prez Election Prediction

November 7, 2012

After BHB reported Tuesday about Brooklyn Heights area resident/NY Times’ 538 Blog guru Nate Silver’s prediction that “President Obama has a 90.9% probability of winning reelection” and his profile in Tablet, it appears the statistician/strategist correctly called every single state in last evening’s election—after being needled for weeks by political commentators who ridiculed his method for forecasting election results.

Egads… It’s Snowing

November 7, 2012

The first day of Winter 2012 isn’t until December 21—but that hasn’t stopped Mother Nature from bringing snow to the region six weeks before the Solstice. Snow began falling lightly in Brooklyn Heights early this afternoon.

4 p.m.: A sopping, sloppy mix is coming down with enough fervor to accumulate on streets, cars and foliage. It’s currently right at the 32-degree mark, with a Severe Weather Alert in place. Temps expected to remain just above freezing throughout the night. Winds are now 26 mph, although high wind advisories are in place, as the storm heads north. 4:30 p.m.: just passing Atlantic City. See more nabe pics below. (CT)

The Latest Poop On Garbage Collection

November 7, 2012

Another update on what is becoming a regular topic of interest in the neighborhood: refuse, rubish, trash! Here’s Judy Stanton from the BHA: “Our local garage superintendent informed me (Tuesday night) that he will have regular garbage trucks in the Heights Wednesday, but no recyclables whatsoever will be picked up. Even if the DSNY does not plan to issue summonses, the neighborly thing to do is keep what is not going to be picked up off the curb and preferably out of sight. Reminder: The corner baskets are for pedestrian litter only.”

Mayor Bloomberg, meanwhile, says that heavily impacted nabes from Hurricane Sandy—including Staten Island, south Queens and southern Brooklyn—will have collection & debris removal around the clock, while less impacted areas may see collections reduced. “Areas normally receiving three times a week collection may only receive two collections per week, while areas that receive two times per week collection may only receive one collection while emergency debris removal work continues.” Sanitation crews are currently working 12-hour shifts, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

G Subway Train Returns With Limited Service

November 7, 2012

The MTA announced this morning that the G train has returned, albeit with “with extended waits between trains due to ongoing signal repairs,” according to Curbed. The train will have eight cars, up from its usual four, so it’s actually the size of a regular train. It is running between Court Square and Church Avenue.

City Council Member Steve Levin, whose district includes Greenpoint and parts of the waterfront stretching from Williamsburg to Brooklyn Heights and into Park Slope, raised sand Monday that G and L subway service had not yet returned following Hurricane Sandy. He told The New York Observer, “Commuters along the G-train deserve the same service and respect that other lines get. And the same goes for the L-train.”
