On August 8, 2007, an EF2 tornado—strong enough to foster winds of 111-135 mph—touched down in Kings County, New York, the most powerful tornado in New York to date and the first in Brooklyn since 1889. What’s putting the wind in your sails on this Open Thread Wednesday?

Bricks Fall From Assumption Church on Cranberry Street

August 8, 2012

A part of the facade of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church at 55 Cranberry Street fell to the ground on Tuesday morning. No one was injured. The sidewalk in front of the building has been closed to pedestrians.

This incident comes amidst the church’s effort to raise funds for much needed repairs on the building, which opened its doors on August 15, 1909. The parish was established in Brooklyn in 1842 on Jay Street and was the area’s first Roman Catholic church.

Those wishing to donate funds to the church may do so by filling out this form on the church’s website.

It was six years ago today, at 4:13 p.m., that we started Brooklyn Heights Blog with this post.

In those six years we’ve made some great neighborhood friends, learned and wrote about the fascinating history of the area and covered some really interesting characters.

Thanks for encouraging our behavior.

Fire at Park Plaza Diner in Brooklyn Heights

August 4, 2012

From Twitter: @sarahboatright tweeted this evening that there’s a fire at the Park Plaza Diner. She reports that FDNY is on the scene. Update:The situation now appears to be under control.

More photos and a dramatic before/after shot after the jump. (photo: @sarahboatright)

BHB reader “Sarah Jane” sent us these before and after shots of the blaze. In cases like this, where the fire starts quickly but is put out as fast, it’s believed to be grease related.

What Will “Seedlings” on Henry Street Be?

August 3, 2012

Our man with a cam, Karl Junkersfeld, has prodded and probed his North Heights sources – including building owner Jim Montemarano – on what the new establishment at 37 Henry Street will be. All we know is that it will be named “Seedlings”.

This isn’t the first time a mysterious sign has heralded a new business in the North Heights. In 2007, the so-called “partners” behind the ill fated Busy Chef posted a note asking passersby if they were “curious” about what was to come. Oh, if we knew then what we knew now.

At least we do know now that one of the most respected business owners in Brooklyn Heights is behind whatever will be in this space. And that is a good thing.

Will it be a place for kids? A flower shop? Be inspired by Karl’s clip and then comment below.

Report: The C Train Sucks… Again

August 2, 2012

The C Train is the worst subway line in the city according to the latest survey from the Straphangers Campaign. The C rocked the bottom of the group’s list with its kissin’ cousin the A ranking only 3 positions higher. As for the other main lines running through Brooklyn Heights – R, N, 2, 3 – they finished in the middle of the pack. The Q train topped the list as NYC’s best.

One of the main reasons the C finished last according to the report is lack of cleanliness. The rampant filth is a well known issue, especially with readers of the Train Pigs blog which is hyperfocused on exposing folks who eat on the subway. Their latest post says the C is “cursed with some of the oldest cars in the entire fleet possessing their own unique stench.

The full Straphangers report is available here.

NYT: Cars on the C line are the oldest in the subway system and among the oldest city subway trains in regular operation anywhere. They are also among the darkest in New York — and that, the transportation authority said, accounted for at least some of the cleanliness complaints.

“I’m sure that there is some cleanliness involved, but a lot of it does have to do with perception,” Charles Seaton, a spokesman for the authority, said. “The fact that the car is a dim car makes it perceived as being dirtier.”
