VIDEO: A Visit To Della Pietra’s On Atlantic Avenue In Brooklyn Heights

August 20, 2013

Our man with a cam Karl Junkersfeld visited Della Pietra’s Prime Meats, which is now open for business at 193 Atlantic Avenue. Karl, just like Oprah or Charlie Rose, gets the skinny on why the meat at this new butcher is different than others in the area.

Also, BHB pals EJ and Beth visited Della Pietra’s yesterday and enjoyed a lovely cookout on Pier 5.

Watch This New Version Of The Beastie Boys’ Sabotage Video Not Only Does It Have A Brooklyn Heights Connection But It May Save Libraries Everywhere

August 20, 2013

The Mike and Duane Show, based out of a co-ed private school in Chicago, is known for their annual wacky takeoffs of video classics. Their latest release is a version of the Beastie Boys’ legendary video ‘Sabotage’ featuring librarians.

Talk about citizens saving libraries – this video is already going viral and it makes librarians look AWESOME.

Of course there’s the obvious Brooklyn Heights connection – the late Adam “MCA” Yauch grew up here and Mike D. attended St. Ann’s School.

However, there’s one more very subtle Brooklyn Heights connection in the video – can you name what it is?

Jimmy McMillan, The Rent Is Too Damn High Guy, Comes To Brooklyn Heights

August 9, 2013

The average rent in Brooklyn moved over the $3000/month mark according to a report from realtor Douglas Elliman. Most of that spike is due to increased demand in Brooklyn Heights and other “hot” neighborhoods. That apparently prompted a visit to our side of Court Street from Jimmy McMillan of The Rent Is Too Damn High Party.

NY Post: Driving the surge was growing demand in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill, fabulous news for Brooklyn’s status-symbol crowd, but not so much for residents looking for affordable places to live.

Actor Jim Callahan, whose wife is pregnant, said he’s concerned about the cost of a bigger apartment for his family.

“It is a great area and we feel very fortunate to live here,” said Callahan, 33, of Cobble Hill. “But as far as the long run goes, it’s getting more and more unrealistic. We just have to kind of shove a baby in there somewhere.

Zipper: Coney Island’s Last Wild Ride to Screen at IFC

August 8, 2013

Zipper, a documentary about the fight to save Coney Island, opens at the IFC Center this Friday and runs through Thursday.

The film’s roots go back to director Amy Nicholson’s love of Coney Island, as it reminded her of her childhood spent near Ocean City, MD—a shore community full of people watchers, Def Leppard blaring from boom boxes, and ride operators calling, “You want to go … faster?!” But it was an article about the end of the Zipper ride that turned her from observer to investigator, delving into the politics behind the changing Coney Island. “I originally wanted to make a film that was an homage to Zipper,” Nicholson said. “But it bothered me that I didn’t understand why the ride was being taken away.” The film then grew into an exploration of the tug-of-war between those who wanted to turn Coney Island into what resembled a seaside Times Square—namely, Joe Sitt, CEO of Thor Equities—and those who strove to retain the park and community, good and bad … with both sides doing what they felt was best.

And while Sitt—a Brooklyn boy who grew up near Coney Island and who named Thor Equities after the Marvel Comics character—might be an easy target as the film’s villain, Nicholson says it’s not that easy. “I guess the villain is the process and the politics. But I don’t point to him as the bad guy. I don’t think he did Coney Island any favors, but I promised to treat him fairly, and I did. He doesn’t see anything wrong in what he did,” as shown in the scene where Sitt happily listed all retailers that he wanted to add, from a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, to a Coldstone Creamery.

Zipper also stars a cast of characters from the neighborhood, including the ride operators themselves. According to Nicholson, “The guys who ran it could tell by the sound whether it was working well or not. It’s a contraption! And it was invented to make people scream. I interviewed the ride’s inventor, who said, ‘If people scream, it’s a good thing.’” Zipper the ride now resides in Honduras; to see Zipper the film, visit IFC Center’s site for screening dates and times.

5 Reasons It’s Time For “It’s Showtime” To End On The NYC Subway

July 29, 2013

Everyone has their own special flower inside them. The creativity of dance is a wonderful way for one to express emotion and to share the joy of music with others. However, the long standing tradition of ‘IT’S SHOWTIME” on the NYC subway system has to end. While the efforts of the roving bands of break dancers (as we believe is still the vernacular) are quite impressive, most commuters would prefer a quite ride home without someone’s Adidas flying into his or her face.

Here’s our 5 Reasons “It’s Showtime” Must End:

1) Real New Yorkers Hate It

2) The New York Times Does A Piece About The Dancers Resulting in Over 200 Negative Comments

“Josh F” comments: they definitely have some impressive moves. they are also extremely annoying, and more importantly—dangerous.

in addition, they’re not all just a bunch of basically good kids. just a few days before this article was published, some subway dancers attacked a rider on the F train coming into manhattan.

he was taken to the hospital, while they just jumped off the train and vanished. thanks for all your hard work, cops…

3) They’re Now Taking Time Out From Dancing To F**k People Up

In May a group of “It’s Showtimers” got into spat with a passenger and beat him.

4) It’s Now Part Of The Hipster Irony Lexicon

5) Hating Hearing “It’s Showtime” Made Buzzfeed’s List Of Signs You’ve Lived In NYC Too Long

…and anything that breathes life into that Media Deathstar must stop.

Cobble Hill’s Bien Cuit On Smith Street Garners Sweet Superlatives

July 9, 2012

With its ever-evolving selection of local eateries and novel boutiques, residents of Cobble Hill have come to know Smith Street as one of the most inviting corridors in South Brooklyn. It appears the word is out. In two separate surveys over the past week, pastry shop Bien Cuit at 120 Smith has been deemed one of New York’s best.

First, Eater offers a survey of New York’s 10 Best New Baked Treats. Bien Cuit reaps high praise for its Almond Croissants. The foodie webbie calls them “almond-y, flaky, buttery, golden-brown croissant perfection.”

Likewise, The Village Voice names Bien Cuit its No. 1 pick among the “10 Best Pastry Shops in New York,” saying: “Everything from this rustic Brooklyn bakery run by husband-and-wife duo Zachary Golper and Kate Wheatcroft is both pretty and delicious. Continue Reading…

Most Walkable Nabes In NYC: Brooklyn Heights & Cobble Hill

April 14, 2012

No surprise to those of us in the know, but hipster pub The L Magazine notes that Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill are “the most walkable neighborhoods in Brooklyn,” according to a study by Walk Score published on website Slate.

The webbie bases its “walk scores” on the amount and accessibility of amenities, including restaurants, movie theater and schools. New York City is the most walkable out of 50 cities surveyed, with a score of 85.3 out of 100, which The L Word notes was knocked down by “unwalkable” Staten Island.

In Brooklyn, Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights had scores of 98. Boerum Hill and Downtown Brooklyn scored 97; DUMBO, Carroll Gardens, Gowanus and Park Slope tied with 96. The least walkable Brooklyn neighborhoods are all in the south: Bergen Beach with a score of 58; Mill Basin with 62; Gerritsen Beach with 71; Canarsie with 74; and Manhattan Beach and West Brighton at 77.

Once again, The L Magazine provides the primary info, with supplemental info linked in the article.
