The Brooklyn Bugle At Montague Street Summer Space – So What Do People Think Of CrumbNuts And Vito Lopez?

September 18, 2013

The BHB/Brooklyn Bugle gang pulled out their dusty tent and held court at the Montague Street Summer Space on Sunday. We met many regular readers for the first time as well as catching up with some of our all time favorites.

But what did we do all day? Well for starters, BHB’s Heather Quinlan handed out DVDs of her FANTASTIC documentary ‘If These Knishes Could Talk‘ to anyone we thought had a good Brooklyn accent.

Things got really nutty when Homer decided to have passersby taste the new “CrumbNut” from Crumbs Bake Shop. Find out what they thought of the new treats as well as how many actually know who Vito Lopez is in the videos above. [Watch on YouTube here]

Montague Street Summer Space continues this Sunday (9/22) starting at noon. Our tent won’t be pitched but we may be holding court somewhere along Montague Street.

Financial Pundit Max Keiser Rides Jane’s Carousel In DUMBO, Thousands Watch Video

September 8, 2013

Max Keiser, who topped Huffington Post’s list of The 25 Most Dangerous People In Financial Media visited with his ol’ college pal Brooklyn Bugle publisher Homer Fink this weekend. For fun they made a stop at the controversial Jane’s Carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Max just enjoyed the ride and the YouTube clip shot by his wife/co-host Stacy Herbert of the Keiser Report host’s spin has already racked up over 1500 views.

Considering his outspokenness, we’re sure a clip of his thoughts regarding the entire financing of Brooklyn Bridge Park would garner thousands more.

International Style: Can Brooklyn’s Global Stature Help The Nets Score Great Players?

September 2, 2013

SN Nation’s Nets blog ponders the notion, brought up on Twitter by CBS Sports writer Matt Moore (@HPbasketball) that the Brooklyn team lands a top free agent this year they could not only be unstoppable but eventually become more popular than the Knicks…well at least internationally:

Nets Blog: Kevin Garnett and Brett Yormark will both be in China later this week, KG on a sneaker promotion, Yormark looking for business opportunities. Meanwhile, Brook Lopez is somewhere between Singapore and Tokyo, the 11th and 12th stops of his international summer, this time helping out in the NBA 3×3. The Brooklynettes are on their way back to Brooklyn after joining Lopez in Singapore. Oh yeah, the Nets sponsored a trip to New York for the Russian U20 team two weeks ago, opening Barclays and the PNY Center to them. Andrei Kirilenko and Lopez met with them.

Meanwhile Moore’s old stomping ground Hardwood Paroxysm pronosticates about the coming season for the Nets:

What the Nets’ season will ultimately come down to, in all likelihood, is whether or not they can stay healthy and who they get matched up against in the playoffs. KG, Pierce, Terry and Kirilenko are getting up there in age, so it’ll be important to manage their minute loads to keep them fresh for the stretch run. Brooklyn mortgaged a lot of its future to bring the Boston guys to town, but like the Nets themselves, we’ll worry about that at a later date. For now, this is a team that has likely vaulted itself into serious contenderdom, and that’s a hell of a way to spend your summer.

VIDEO: A Visit To Della Pietra’s On Atlantic Avenue In Brooklyn Heights

August 20, 2013

Our man with a cam Karl Junkersfeld visited Della Pietra’s Prime Meats, which is now open for business at 193 Atlantic Avenue. Karl, just like Oprah or Charlie Rose, gets the skinny on why the meat at this new butcher is different than others in the area.

Also, BHB pals EJ and Beth visited Della Pietra’s yesterday and enjoyed a lovely cookout on Pier 5.

Watch This New Version Of The Beastie Boys’ Sabotage Video Not Only Does It Have A Brooklyn Heights Connection But It May Save Libraries Everywhere

August 20, 2013

The Mike and Duane Show, based out of a co-ed private school in Chicago, is known for their annual wacky takeoffs of video classics. Their latest release is a version of the Beastie Boys’ legendary video ‘Sabotage’ featuring librarians.

Talk about citizens saving libraries – this video is already going viral and it makes librarians look AWESOME.

Of course there’s the obvious Brooklyn Heights connection – the late Adam “MCA” Yauch grew up here and Mike D. attended St. Ann’s School.

However, there’s one more very subtle Brooklyn Heights connection in the video – can you name what it is?

Brooklyn Heights Cinema: Waiting For Bill Murray

August 19, 2013

A few weeks back, the Brooklyn Heights Cinema added the phrase “Bill Murray Views 4 Free” to its marquee. This makes perfect sense considering the recent spate of sightings of the Caddyshack star in New York City. Sure there’s a site devoted to letting the interwebs know where Murray is, but the latest update was from two weeks ago (in Williamsburg btw).

Gothamist has been covering this phenomenon with as much zeal as they have the drama that is Citibike.

Judge Baynes To SUNY: Restore Services At LICH, Ditch The Goons

August 17, 2013

Supreme Court Justice Johnny Lee Baynes has ordered SUNY to restore servies at LICH to the levels they were at on July 19. Baynes also said he would name an ombudsman for the hospital and added that the armed and unarmed guards SUNY has employed to patrol the grounds must go.

Brooklyn Eagle: The “standstill order” will keep LICH open for care until discussions between SUNY Downstate and a number of groups working to keep LICH open resolve the matter through negotiation. In his order, Justice Baynes said that he has been advised by the Special Referee “that the parties are engaged in ongoing good faith negotiations and hope to resolve the matter to their satisfaction.”

Twitter was buzzing long into the night with congratulations from patients, staff and representatives who have been working around the clock to keep the hospital open.

Gabriele Corcos Vanishes From Bevacco Website, Tweets That He’s Too Busy For The Gig

August 13, 2013

While our report of celebrity chef Gabriele Corcos‘ first night at Bevacco wasn’t the most enthusiastic, we felt that in the long run the union would work out.

Now just two weeks later, the eatery’s website, where the star of TV’s Extra Virgin was featured prominently, no long mentions his involvement as Executive Chef.

The Corner of Cranberry Curse lives?

On another note, Corcos can be seen with his wife Debi Mazar in Lovelace now in theaters and on pay-per-view.

UPDATE: Confirmed. Corcos tweets that he’s too busy for the gig at Bevacco:

The Top 5 Best And Famous Brooklyn Accents

August 10, 2013

The Brooklyn accent (ahem dialect) is world famous. Here’s our totally arbitrary list of the Top 5 (living) practitioners:

5. Gilbert Gottfried: His signature style put the Brooklyn accent back into the zeitgeist (like it evah left!) with his portrayal of the AFLAC duck. While that didn’t go so well in the end, that role, his many appearances on the Howard Stern Show and his brilliant missive about life here before hipsters land him on our list.

4. Jay-Z: No single person personifies REAL Brooklyn right now more than Jay Z. All the skinny jeans, mustaches, reclaimed barn wood and artisanal whatevers in the world won’t make anyone as genuinely BK than Hova from Bed-Stuy. (And for the time being, we’ll overlook this.)

3. Larry King: It’s LARRY KING. Come on! He wrote the book about how awesome Brooklyn is…

2. Barbra Streisand: Poppa can you heyah me? And we mean a different sort of Streisand effect here.

1. Andrew Dice Clay: This month, Clay is enjoying a career resurgence which is great since Sheepshead Bay’s own personifies real Brooklyn – we get knocked down but we get up again. As the MTV VMAs head to the Barclay’s Center to capitalize on “hipster magic”, it just seems right to name the comic who is banned for life from the channel our #1 rep of the Brooklyn accent.

Who’s in your Top 5?
