Farewell DieHipster.com, We Hardly Knew Ye

January 8, 2013

DieHipster.com the Brooklyn based blog started as “A place for real New Yorkers to vent about the invasion of attention starved, useless adults that we know as hipsters” has thrown in the towel. In a January 5 posting its founder said goodbye. For the sane and beardless, it’s a missive worthy of framing:

DieHipster: These culdesacian culture vultures have basically destroyed art and music just about to the point of irreparable. The price of such simple things like rent, coffee and certain foods have doubled and tripled because of these zany cockrag hipster fucks who glorify everything as if they discovered it. These smug, parentally funded interloping idiots pay $11 for two poached eggs and a leaf of fucking kale – and not on Park Avenue but in working class Brooklyn neighborhoods!!! Pizza, pudding, tacos and cupcakes are now earth-shattering, tastier than ever items (according to hipster wannabe foodies who have infiltrated the media) because some sickly-looking, heavily-tattooed, garage rock band failure who arrives to work via pogo stick or unicycle makes it?

The site was an oasis for those looking for a community of like minded folks who felt that the only thing skinny jeans were good for was chafing. For those looking for a reason the site has ended, a morsel of truth may be found in this tweet from its webmaster:

Alas, some are happy to see the site go as evidenced by this Greenpointers.com post:

Finally, the putrid and venomous, toxic and true waste of a blog – Diehipster.com is throwing in the towel.
The best part is that he is the king of hipster irony, because he focused more on hipsters than anyone else cared – thus perpetuating the spread of the culture he despised.
The only thing I will miss is all the traffic he brings to the website when he makes fun of us here. Good riddance! Finally the loser, who spent so much of his life caring about people who don’t care about him – lost.
I wonder what he will do now? Grow a beard? Eat a $10 candy bar? Change his name to Brent? Join a kickball league? Brew his own sustainable local Kombucha? Make a terrarium? The hipster world is his for the taking!
Buh-bye.

The site’s final “hipster beating” was posted on New Year’s Day:

Today, I saw Keegan and Logan stumbling back to their $2800 a month loft in their 19th century barber and paperboy outfits after celebrating another year of funemployment and Brooklyn homogenization by drinking cruelty-free champagne in which the grapes were asked nicely to juice themselves rather than being stomped; and eating local, organic Bushwickian cheese laced with red beard hair and American Spirit cigarette ashes. So I gave them each an uppercut; ran their brochure-like bodies through a paper shredder and tossed the confetti around my still normal and actually diverse neighborhood. End of story.

Attention Stockholm – Here Comes Brooklyn Brewery

January 7, 2013

Williamsburg’s Brooklyn Brewery will be expanding to Sweden by year’s end according to a recent blog post. The company plans a brewery in Stockholm as part of a partnership and exchange program between Brooklyn, D. Carnegie & Co. and Carlsberg Sweden.

Brooklyn Brewery: If you’re wondering “why Stockholm?”… it begins with the mutual appreciation of beer, food, music, art and all around good culture shared by Brooklyn and Sweden (even leading some to ponder if Sweden is the new Brooklyn). Brooklyn Brewery has a long history with Sweden highlighted by the fun fact that Sweden is our largest export market and second biggest market overall (right behind NYC) thanks to our importer and partner in Stockholm brewery, Carlsberg Sweden. We used to distribute the seductively delicious Carnegie Porter in New York back in the day, and in 2011 we collaborated with Carlsberg to produce a bourbon barrel-aged version of this classic beer to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Carnegie Brewery. And let us not forget about the BROOKLYN, SWEDEN music festival we launched last year that sent over 15 Brooklyn bands to Stockholm and Malmö. You could say it was just meant to be.

Director Enjoys Ménage à Trois in Latest Heights Players Production

January 5, 2013

The Heights Players present Charles Busch’s The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife this month (January 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 8:00 p.m) directed by its president Ed Healy. It marks the company’s first production of a Busch play.

Healy discusses directing the play and its infamous ménage à trois scene in an interview with Local Theatre NY (video above).

Heights Players: The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife is a rare foray into the smart and sophisticated humor of Charles Busch, with a simple premise of keeping one’s family together. Marjorie Taub is saddled with an overzealous philanthropic husband, a self-loathing bowel-obsessed mother and a crumbling sense of intellectual stimulation. But then an exuberant woman appears at her door and plants a seed of self-discovery and Marjorie is pushed to the edge of reality. This hysterical, yet sophisticated, comedy is a vibrant tale of new beginnings and a rediscovery of oneself.
Featured in this Heights Players production are all veterans to our stage, although two of these veterans haven’t been on our stage in decades! The allergist’s wife, Marjorie, is being played by Susan Faye Groberg (last seen in Sunrise at Campobello). Her quirky family is rounded out with two returning Heights Players alumni: David Shmerler as her husband Ira; and B.D. Bass as her mother Frieda. Shaking up the foundation of the Taub family is Susan Ann Biderman, last seen in Gemini. The steady presence of the doorman, Mohammad, is deftly handled by Rod Singleton, last seen in Finian’s Rainbow.

Molasses Books is a Place Where You Can Trade In a Book for a Beer

January 5, 2013

Bushwick’s Molasses Books, the shop that is known for accepting books as trade for other books, coffee or tea adds beer and wine to that list this week. The store will host a party Saturday night (1/5) starting at 7pm to celebrate.

Brokelyn adds:

Currently, Molasses offers Genesee Cream Ale and Budweiser for $3, and Steigl and Bass for $4. Winn told us that while the wine list isn’t set in stone yet, they’ll most likely offer a house red and a slightly more upscale wine for $5 and $8, respectively. There’s also plans for a happy hour where Genesee will be a heavenly $2 a can.

Along with beer and wine sales, Molasses Books will be undergoing a number of changes. The store, which was previously staffed only by Winn himself, will be enjoying the company of some new volunteers who will be helping customers as the store expands its hours to be open until 10pm every day. In addition to extended daily hours, Molasses will also be operational on Mondays and plans on packing in a fuller event schedule.

NY Daily News Dedicates a Mighty 3 Paragraphs to “My Brooklyn”

January 4, 2013

No matter where you stand on the gentrification/improvement of Downtown Brooklyn battle, Elizabeth Weitzman’s 3 paragraph review in today’s New York Daily News of “My Brooklyn”, Kelly Anderson’s Fulton Mall documentary feels a little light.

Judge for yourself:

How ironic that the primary flaw in “My Brooklyn” is the insistent presence of director Kelly Anderson. Anderson is a white, middle-class Brooklynite who has noticed the shifting socio-economic makeup of her brownstone neighborhoods, and wonders what price the borough is paying for gentrification.
It’s an excellent question, and when Anderson allows the experts — or simply those most deeply impacted by the changes — to speak, the film has a powerful urgency. Most interesting is the focus on the Fulton Mall, in which businesses primarily owned and patronized by African-Americans are increasingly being displaced by corporate interests.
But every time we start to learn something about the city’s political process or cultural divisions, Anderson relates it back to her own personal experience. At first, it’s simply an irritating distraction. As she continues to insert herself into this urban history, however, it begins to feel like an uncomfortable reflection of the kind of encroachment the film itself decries.

Historian & ‘Brooklyn Heights Press’ Editor Henrik Krogius To Retire

December 29, 2012

Emmy-award winning news producer & 22-year editor of the Brooklyn Heights Press Henrik Krogius has announced his retirement, reports the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. At the helm of the 75-year-old Brooklyn Heights Press and Cobble Hill News weekly, “Krogius chronicled the neighborhood’s change from a insular, Manhattan-oriented world to its present day as part of a transformed Brownstone and Downtown Brooklyn,” the paper says, adding, “His award-winning photography, insightful editorial comment and a deep working knowledge of Brooklyn’s history made the paper a must-read for residents of the Heights.”

In a farewell editorial, Krogius shares, “My career has gone through many changes, from movie house newsreels to early-days black-and-white television to color television and satellite transmissions, and back to the traditional weekly newspaper. I’ve sometimes felt I was a living anachronism, watching obsolescence take over everything I was involved in. Perhaps it’s time for something more restful or in any case, some project not bound to the insistent wheel of progress or ‘progress.’” (Photo: CT)

Nets Fire Coach Johnson, Fans Tweet Their Disapproval

December 28, 2012

The Brooklyn Nets made their first big move since setting up shop in the borough this season by firing coach Avery Johnson. Most fans didn’t like the team’s decision. Many blamed star player Deron Williams for Johnson’s dismissal but despite his reputation for getting coaches whacked, he claims he had no influence on the decision. At one point today, even the coach’s son piled on with his criticism of the Nets’ front office.

An odd twist to the story – Johnson was named the NBA’s Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for October and November this year.
